In terms of council house sales, researchers argue the right to buy reduced state involvement but also created a real estate market that favored higher income groups.

It came crashing down as factories closed.

Meanwhile, the Right to Buy scheme offered council tenants a chance at ownership.

On paper, it increased home ownership figures, but it also thinned social housing stock.

That doesn't tend to happen now because 25% of the homes in Scotland are now social housing, whereas it used to be much, much higher percentage.

And a, a real history lesson, way back in the 1980s, Margaret Thatcher famously had the right to buy-

... scheme, so a lot of the housing stock was sold off, but nothing was built behind it to house the people that were gonna come along in the future, right? That's the very basics of it.

Our population was growing at a rate that house building was not matching.

I do think it was an original failure of Mrs. Thatcher not to have reinvested the money from Right to Buy.

That should not have been in social housing, in my view.

That should have been in deregulation.

If someone has come here and lived for their whole life since they were two and been, uh, been a contribution and they fall on hard times, I think we do have responsibility to those people.

I don't think it's going too far to the left.

One thing that I haven't heard them cheer most about in the policy, which I think they should, is they want to re-energize right to buy.

Mm.

And that's what we need now.

I mean, all the right to buy just took it away.

Everything that had been built up.

you know, over 100 years was just destroyed.
