Welcome to The Rundown.
Jeyan JeganathanHOST
What is it like to rebuild your life after gun violence? And how do you go about telling that story and the larger story of a community dealing with trauma? Nekai Foster, Rico King, Devon Jones, great to have you in our studios.
Jeyan JeganathanHOST
Thank you so much for joining me.
Jeyan JeganathanHOST
Before we get into things, Nakai, it's great to have you here with us.
Elisa BirnbaumHOST
I'm your host, Elisa Birnbaum, publisher and editor-in-chief of SeaChange Magazine.
Elisa BirnbaumHOST
On today's special episode, we speak with Rico King, director of the award-winning documentary Nikai Walks, and Yvonne Jones, community activist and one of the film's subjects, whose voice you just heard a moment ago.
Elisa BirnbaumHOST
Nakai Walks recounts the story of a 16-year-old survivor of gun violence in Toronto's Jane and Finch community.
Elisa BirnbaumHOST
While Nakai's personal story is one of resilience and hope, its backdrop is one of frustration, anger, despair, with the documentary highlighting the unrelenting cycle of violence in the community and its far-reaching impact.
Dave BaldwinHOST
Hi, everyone, and welcome back to Fingerguns with Tony, Dave, and James.
Dave BaldwinHOST
I am your fearless co-host, Dave Baldwin, and I'm taking a little break here from TIFF to bring you this interview I did a few weeks back with Rico King, who directed Nakai Walks, which premieres this weekend on TVO.
Dave BaldwinHOST
The documentary won the best audience award at Hot Docs this past spring, and it profiles Nakai Foster, who was shot in the head in a random drive-by shooting at Jane and Finch a few years back.
Dave BaldwinHOST
And it kind of goes through his recovery and how he learned how to become himself again, as well as taking a look at gun violence in Toronto.
Dave BaldwinHOST
But in the meantime, we're going to have more TIFF coverage coming your way.
Dave BaldwinHOST
So stay tuned for that.
Dave BaldwinHOST
And here's my interview with Rico King on Nakai Walks.
Dave BaldwinHOST
Well, Rico, it's lovely to meet you.
