Playing librarian and unexpected archaeologist Evelyn Carnahan is Rachel Weisz.

Jonathan Carnahan gives his sister Evelyn, a librarian and aspiring Egyptologist, a box and a map leading to Hamunaptra.

He stole them from adventurer Rick O'Connell, who found the city while in the French Foreign Legion.

Evelyn bargains with a corrupt prison warden to free the imprisoned Rick so he can guide them to the Golden Book of Amun-Ra.

In Hamunaptra, they compete with an American expedition guided by Benny Gobber, Rick's cowardly fellow former legionnaire, and Magi leader Ardeth Bay warns them to leave.

The Americans find the Book of the Dead while Evelyn, Rick, and Jonathan discover Imhotep's mummified remains.

That night, Evelyn steals the book and, reading aloud from it, accidentally awakens Imhotep.
