Rick Griffin

So that's how we have been talking about it.

The Haight Street Art Center show is kind of, not to denigrate it, but it's more of a straight art exhibition with lots of original works of art that were turned into posters from Rick Griffin and Wes Wilson and everybody else you can imagine.

When you get to the Haight Street Arts Center at 215 Haight, and we're open Thursday through Sunday, noon to six, and it's free.

You walk through our doorway and around our doorway, like I think it's like 17 feet high, is a mural that Dennis Larkins kindly did for us.

And then for August, late July and August, we had Jerry's stuff for obvious reasons.

And now we've got kind of a pretty eclectic mix of sort of post-Grateful Dead guitars played by John Mayer, types of guitars that Bob Weir played with Rap Dog and Dead & Company.

And then, you know, the galleries are just filled with original pieces, you know, Rick Griffin's original art for Without a Net, stuff like that.

I mean, just on and on and on and on.

And so I stole that and I used that for a little bit.

I realized, well, Rick Griffin is the artist who actually did this artwork and I didn't license it from him.

So I'm really stealing it from him.

So I dropped the Grateful Dead connotation and had other artists come up with other logos for me that I use.

I haven't been stealing Rick Griffin's logo since 1986.

When I got together with Christina and we started working together, that really sort of...

And I started getting... commission to do certain jobs.

It's a certain kind of music which I c- I c- I understand it on one level, but it is, it isn't attractive to me

meIn the summer of 1985, as we've discussed, the Grateful Dead took to the stage in front of a giant banner by Rick Griffin, depicting a skeleton in Minuteman garb, holding a guitar, standing tall in front of an American flag.

Another way to look at the Minuteman is as someone holding their high ground, the highest perhaps.

The Dead were on their own path, taking their own sweet, unslick time, and the Deadheads were right along with them.

And then he was also glassing his boards.

And who was this dude? Huh? Who was this dude? A guy named Ryan.

Ryan Tallmeyer.

was like three people out yeah perfect stomach high bone wow okay on 1980s thrusters you know all 20 inches wide um anyways anyway i was watching him try and glass his board that he shaped and i was like oh that looks a little rough So I went to Yellow Pages.

Well, I asked the guys at the shipyard where I work building, repairing boats.

Can we glass a board here? They're like, oh, there's there's all kinds of little places.

So basically all the guys who did Zap.

All of them.

How could somebody turn away the Grateful Dead American Beauty or something like that? I wasn't a big Grateful Dead fan.

When you have a cover by Rick Griffin and stuff and Stanley Moss, you go, shit, I'm going to buy it for this.

And it's a bonus when the music is good, too.
