Avery, why aren't you out there still hunting or spot and stalking them like we do out west? That would be about impossible here, wouldn't it?

It would.

It would be very difficult.

You could hunt natural food sources.

such as apple trees, oaks, beech nuts.

However, because of our regulations that protect females with cubs and those cubs, it's important for hunters to get a good look at the animals before they shoot one.

And by hunting over bait, it increases the opportunity.

What are those?

What's the latest on that? Well,

currently, wolves in Michigan and in the Great Lakes region are listed under the Endangered Species Act where they do not belong.

It's a political listing rather than a biological listing.

Wolves are not endangered in Michigan.

We have plenty of them in the UP.

They need to be taken off of the endangered species list so they can be managed.

We had one wolf hunt years ago in the UP where we had a very specific quota for the number of wolves to be taken by hunters.

That's pretty grim.

Thank you, yes.

[laughs] Um, and it, it, it, it has changed in the fact that there's individual groups of hunters who think the way they do it is the way that everybody should do it, and they're trying to dictate-How everyone hunts because that's the way they want it done, but it, they fail to recognize that everybody hunts for a different reason and get different things about, out of it based on their individual situation.

Uh, everybody's different.

Everybody gets something different out of it, and [clears throat] they're claiming they want these changes to benefit the resource, but that's not what happens.

It's to benefit them personally, psychologically if nothing else, that they can control how everybody hunts, and it's not benefiting the resource at all.

And that includes the current recommendations to go to a one buck bag limit in the state and shorten deer season, potentially shorten deer seasons, muzzleloader season in the UP and the northern lower, and of gun deer season, changing it from 16 to nine days.

Totally unnecessary.

But the more I talk with other hunters around the state, I don't feel like necessarily that one buck crowd is a vast majority of hunters in Michigan.
