Someone cooked up the idea that if they launched a really horrible story, the publicity would be so bad for the station that KYW's management would take the fall for it.

And that Jerry was just basically a means to an end to achieve that goal.

Which seems really, I mean, not only... cruel and diabolical, but really naive, you know, and perhaps that perhaps they knew full well that Jerry would take a hit, but they didn't expect him to take a hit alone.

And maybe the level of a hit that he did take.
