I would argue she has three and a half good performances.

This is the half, Homesman.

Million Dollar Baby, begrudgingly, I don't love that movie, but she's good in it.

Boys Don't Cry, I kind of did.

I don't love that movie.

She's good in it.

But it did feel like a moment where in this relatively kind of oddly paced movie, complimentary, that you would get this thing like, ah, yeah, like these fuckers are going to get it now.

Like it's nothing.

The British Army starts coming over and, [clears throat] um, who was it? It was Clinton and a couple of the other guys.

I can't think of who, who, who the British officers were.

But they start forming their men up in, uh, regular, you know, lines, as, as you do if you're a British officer.

You're gonna line, line your men up and march them up that hill.

Well, by now it's hot.

It's, you know, it's after noon, and they're looking at this hill, and then they're looking at these men.

Yes, that was powerful.

when I was just kinda looking back and matching up the dates for things 'cause we still hadn't gotten The Empire Strikes Back or the Indiana Jones sequels or the Rocky sequels.

And so maybe this was more novel at the time because, like, it totally worked.

Apparently, it was l- it had, like, the highest opening weekend, um, I think ever at that point, and then was the highest grossing sequel of all time briefly 'cause it didn't have a lot of competition.

I think Rocky II, like, beat it, like, the next year.

But, like, people came out for it for sure, and I could see there being a lot of hype around it, um, and, like, getting those butts in seats.

It's gonna be the most likely-

... could easily be one of those, you know, stock charac- wife characters in these, like, where, "You're never home.

You missed the kids' school play." And, you know, you as an audience member are like, "Well, right, because he's trying to save the world.

I'm sorry, but that is a little bit more important than the school play." But in this movie, like, you really do understand Eve's point of view.

Like, she's not just a sort of nagging plot device.

Like, she actually has a lot of good points about why he should be home more and that she's going through grief, too, and her daughter's going through grief, too, you know? And so a part of Archer's rejection of his family is, like, the movie indicts him for it, I think, in a pretty fair way.

Mm-hmm.

And w- something I think, again, this movie having a bit more thought and maybe even, like, humanity than many of its action brethren is that when, uh, Sasha is dying, it cuts to Eve, who in some ways should be like, "W- what is this bond that this w- random woman has with my husband in this other person's face?" But she, like, sheds a tear, I think, out of grief for this woman, not knowing even that much-

Um, and I think that he does that really well.

I think it's a world he knows well, you know? Um, so he can get the specifics right.

Um, you know, and it's, it, it's funny, it's sweet, it's sad.

Um, uh, a- and all of that kind of combines to a sort of crowd-pleasy kind of, you know, sort of quality that is not always what Cannes audiences want.

You know, I think that everyone here kind of gets a little high-minded, and it's like, "Oh, we don't want any sort of, you know, traditional Hollywood storytelling," you know? But if it works, it works.
