In this hour of need, Abram hastened back to North Carolina to help fight the battles of freedom.

And so I did find that I needed to kind of think about what my prose was going to look like, what kind of concessions to this different form of writing I would need to make and which hills I kind of would die on and then would not go, what routes I just wouldn't go down.

But I did find myself trying to figure out what the weather was like in a particularly hot Elizabethan summer, so I could put myself in the shoes of the alchemist and translator Richard Eden as he set to work translating passages about Atlantic travel for his patrons or watching videos about contemporary Inuit sealskin preparation to write more knowledgeably about the parkas that English privateers brought to Elizabethan London from Nunavut in what is today Canada.

I think it did help me slow down a little bit and just spend a bit more time with sources.

I think sometimes I get a bit greedy and I start to find evidence of something and I just want to find more evidence of this and kind of look elsewhere and kind of collate all these materials together and build a bigger picture right away.
