Because a hipa is a legume, it has evolved a highly sophisticated symbiotic relationship with a specific genus of soil bacteria called Rhizobium.

These bacteria literally infect the root hairs of the ahipa plant, but it's a mutually beneficial infection.

The plant forms these little tumors or nodules to house them.
