Revised Version

Job chapter 12 verse 10.

The revised version renders, the breath of all mankind, or the spirit of all mankind.

As far as this word is concerned, then, there is no ambiguity.

It belongs to the circle of ideas connected with the belief that the soul can be detached from the body for short or long periods.

It has been amply proved that this belief has been and is held by men in a primitive stage of culture in many parts of the world.

Quite possibly Frazer may be right in his conjecture that the houses of the soul mentioned in Isaiah chapter three verse twenty, the Revised Version renders perfume boxes, evidently following the Vulgate, were amulets in which the soul of the wearer was supposed to lodge.

In the text, these words are followed by and the amulets.

That's what they said.

They said, we need a revised version.

And so they scraped together a bunch of manuscripts, and the primary manuscripts that they got together came from a text.

And I want you to get the name of the text.

Nothing really serious, just a few minor changes.

Do you know how many changes they actually made? They made over 36,000 changes.

If you took your revised version that finally came out 11 years later, 1881.

Oh, and by the way, in your Bible, the number 11 is the number of confusion.

Peter tells us that no prophecy ever came by the will of man, but men spake from God being moved by the Holy Spirit.

2 Peter 1.21, Revised Version Prophecy here applies to the word written, as is indicated in the preceding verse, and means not merely the foretelling of events, but the utterances of any word of God without reference as to time past, present, or to come.

As a matter of fact, what Peter declares is that the will of man had nothing to do with any part of the Old Testament, but that the whole of it, from Genesis to Malachi, was inspired by God.

Of course, Paul says the same, in language even plainer, in 2 Timothy 3.16. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable.

The phrase inspiration of God means literally God-breathed.

The whole of the Old Testament is God-breathed, for it is to that part of the Bible the language particularly refers, since the New Testament as such was not then generally known.

As this verse is given somewhat differently in the revised version, we dwell upon it a moment longer.

It there reads, "...every scripture inspired of God is also profitable, and the caviler is disposed to say that therefore some scripture may be inspired and some may not be, and that the profitableness extends only to the former and not the latter." But aside from the fact that Paul would hardly be guilty of such a weak truism as that, it may be stated in reply, first, that the King James rendering of the passage is not only the more consistent scripture, but the more consistent Greek.

To the same purport, the compilers of the valuable historical catalogue of the Bible Society have noted it as remarkable to what an extent the first printed English Testament fixed the phraseology of all its successors.

Even in the revised version of 1881, it has been calculated that at least 80% of the words stand precisely as they stood in Tyndale's Testament of 1525.

It has also been noted as matter for surprise that there is so little difference between the English of 1525 and that of the ordinary Bibles.

For in the Gospel of Mark and the Epistle to the Hebrews, there are not more than 80 words which are not found in the Authorized Version of 1611.

That is, there are not more than four strangers in every thousand words.

Sometimes a change made from Tyndale was a change decidedly for the worse.

as in the case of st john chapter ten sixteen where there shall be one flock was altered to one fold a change which has been set right in the revised version of eighteen eighty one no doubt changes which have been improvements have been made by those who followed tyndale but the plan and spirit of the work are his to him men are indebted more than they realize for melodious phrases and happy turns of expression such as singing and making melody in your hearts in him we live and move and have our being turned to flight the armies of the aliens in his account of the production of the english bible froude the historian is inaccurate in his details but he expresses the calm judgment of those who know when he speaks as follows of the translation itself though since that time it has been many times revised and altered we may say that it is substantially the bible with which we are familiar the peculiar genius if such a word may be permitted which breeze through it the mingled tenderness and majesty the saxon simplicity the preternatural grandeur unequalled unapproached in attempted improvements of modern scholars are all here and bear the impress of the mind of one man william lying while engaged in that great office under the shadow of death the sword above his head and ready at any moment to fall he worked under circumstances alone perhaps truly worthy of the task which was laid upon him His spirit, as it were divorced from the world, moved in a purer element than common air.

While living in Antwerp, Tyndale lodged in the house of Thomas Points, an Englishman who kept there a house of English merchants.

I'm just quoting him verbatim, lest you think I'm misquoting him.

They saw Jesus as the King James Version and Revised Version have it, which were the two leading translations of his day, walking on the sea.

The Greek is epites balises, which is precisely the phrase used in John 21.1, where it means that Jesus was walking on the seashore.

And that's true, it's a precise phrase.

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, which some reaching after have been led astray from the faith, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

It is not easy to say exactly in what sense Jacob used these words in the midst of his prophecies in regard to the future of his sons.
