Good morning and welcome back to Retail Media Breakfast Club.
Kiri MastersHOST

Yesterday I shared the first half of a piece that I wrote for my column at The Drum about the different eras of retail media and I shared how we have an evolution playing out with retail media as being built as a monolithic all-in-one ad platform like Amazon was able to.
Kiri MastersHOST
0:25
We then had the advent of specialist retail media tech companies like CitrusAd and Criteo enabling everyone else with an all-in-one kind of solution, which consolidated demand and supply.
Kiri MastersHOST
0:43
in a simple, easy to buy solution for retailers.
Kiri MastersHOST
0:46
Certainly go back and listen to part one if you missed that yesterday.
Kiri MastersHOST
0:50
But part two, we're coming around to a little refinement of this concept, which is that technology and eras of technology aren't the only access of which to look at the broad landscape of retail media capabilities on the market today.
Kiri MastersHOST
1:11
And for this part of the article, I drew on an interview on the Retail Media Therapy podcast, which is excellent.
Kiri MastersHOST
1:20
And I recently played part of this interview on the show on a different topic about RMN aggregators.
Brett HouseHOST
2:53
And now you guys are sort of positioned as a full go-to-market intelligence platform.
Brett HouseHOST
2:57
That's pushed heavy into omni-channel commerce and retail media.
Brett HouseHOST
3:00
A big retail
Rio LongacreHOST
3:01
media push, commerce media push,
Rio LongacreHOST
6:42
But I think it's definitely going to be worth the wait when looking at all the stuff we really want to talk about.
Rio LongacreHOST
6:47
And I think the timing is good for this.
Rio LongacreHOST
6:49
And it's our hypothesis for this episode that retail media, now that it's become such a big part of digital media itself, it's entering a new phase, right? The first era was defined by the meteoric growth of Amazon, right? Walmart and a few others, giving people, connecting advertisers directly to transactions, which was something that was real kind of novel, right? Like that I think retail and commerce media did better than really better than any of these other channels, right? Right.
Rio LongacreHOST
7:15
But it's our belief that the next era is going to be defined by really proving out incrementality, right? Showing, okay, is the spend worth the squeeze? Is the juice worth the squeeze? Are these ads that we're placing, are they driving incremental transactions that people wouldn't have made? So I think we're kind of entering that.
Ben MillerHOST
0:21
OK, look, for listeners who aren't familiar with Unlimital, who are you?
Alexis MarcombeGUEST
0:26
First, I'm the CEO of Unlimited and Unlimited is a joint venture between Carrefour and Publicis and the idea is to offer to retailers and brands an ability to operate retail media at scale in Europe because as you know Europe is far different from the US It's 27 countries, as many languages as we have some countries, different retailers, and so it can easily become a nightmare.
Alexis MarcombeGUEST
0:52
So the idea is to ease everything so that retail media can be a dream for everyone.
Ben MillerHOST
0:58
Selling the retail media dream.
Ben MillerHOST
0:59
So, Alexis, this is our first Retail Media Conversation today, so I'm really excited to get deep into this.
Ben MillerHOST
1:04
But let's start with a little bit more on Unlimital.
Ben MillerHOST
1:08
Obviously, you're very closely associated with CAF4.
Ben MillerHOST
1:12
where the joint venture grew out of, but when you launched, you launched with 13 partners, and you've grown since then, so talk me through about some of the other retailers that are involved, and also how do you make that work? I mean, it's not CAFOR's retail media network, it's something very different, so describe that.

Excited to bring you another episode here.

9 MINS LATER

Nicole LesinskiGUEST
9:38
And it was like we were like, OK, this is the mission.
Nicole LesinskiGUEST
9:42
We have to maybe make some online e-courses for even our highest leaders to understand like.
Nicole LesinskiGUEST
9:49
Why retail media? Why e-commerce? And we had to showcase what the importance was behind this.
Nicole LesinskiGUEST
9:55
If we're not going to get behind this now, then we're going to miss this opportunity of growth.
Kiri MastersHOST

On a recent call, a retail media leader at a mid-sized US network told me how technology decisions actually get made.
Kiri MastersHOST
0:09
They told me how they joined the company and did what any competent operator would do.
Kiri MastersHOST
0:14
They audited the on-site ad stack.
Kiri MastersHOST
1:25
Without this, my source estimates the network would've missed seven figures in ad opportunities it didn't know that it had.
Kiri MastersHOST
1:34
Welcome to 2026 and the manual labor still holding up a US retail [chuckles] media network.
Kiri MastersHOST
1:44
Retail media might feel new, but it isn't.
Kiri MastersHOST
1:46
It has already been through several eras and reinventions over the past decade or so, and today's operators have more technology options available to them than at any previous point.
Kiri MastersHOST
2:00
What they don't have is a straightforward way to get it approved and installed.

Retail Media Therapy.
Viv CraskeHOST
0:38
but were afraid to ask.
Viv CraskeHOST
0:41
And this episode is a very special episode, right, Colin? It is a
Colin LewisHOST
0:46
very special episode because we have the legend that is Andrew Lipsman, who's not just like one of the best moment analysts and consultants in retail media, but he runs a fantastic...
Colin LewisHOST
0:56
Newsletter called Media, Ads and Commerce, which I'm assuming you're all signed up to.
Colin LewisHOST
1:01
And he is the person who came up with the visual that basically showed how Retail Media is the fastest growing advertising channel ever.
Colin LewisHOST
1:10
Andrew, hello and welcome to the podcast.
Andrew LipsmanGUEST
1:16
Colin, Viv, thanks for having me.
Mike ShieldsHOST
7:54
We're going to get out in front of CTV.
Mike ShieldsHOST
7:56
We're going to get out in front of retail media, two areas of real growth.
Mike ShieldsHOST
7:59
Did they not make enough moves in those two areas and rely too heavily on this area that was going to get hit so hard? Or maybe, to be fair, maybe they were always going to run out of room.
Mike ShieldsHOST
8:11
Do either of you have a thought on that?
Kiri MastersHOST
0:23
But as usual, the more interesting conversation happened after I shared that piece in the comments on LinkedIn.
Kiri MastersHOST
0:32
So let's get straight to the question that actually matters to anyone who is managing a budget or running a retail media network.
Kiri MastersHOST
0:41
Does any of this change where the money goes? My prediction, sadly, I don't think so, though I would be thrilled to be proven wrong.
Kiri MastersHOST
0:53
Let's get into it.
Kiri MastersHOST
2:07
So neither outcome has money leaving the Amazon orbit anytime soon.
Kiri MastersHOST
2:12
But there is a silver lining here for two groups.
Kiri MastersHOST
2:15
First of all, every other retail media network now has a window to play the transparency card, the trust card, to show their cards on auction mechanics before anyone forces them to, or just take advantage of this moment to demonstrate how they are different.
Kiri MastersHOST
2:31
[laughs] Walmart Connect made a lot of noise when it moved to second price ad auction format in 2022, and advertisers genuinely cared.
Nick MorganHOST
2:22
Helen, look, one of the things that feels different over the last couple of years is the language that we're all using.
Nick MorganHOST
2:28
A few years ago, everyone talked about retail media.
Nick MorganHOST
2:31
Now we're hearing much more about commerce media, hence Commerce Media Matters podcast.
Nick MorganHOST
2:36
That feels like more than a rebrand, right? There's real shift happening.
Helen JohnsonGUEST
3:17
And I say that because I've heard sometimes it referred to just offsite, for example, or I've heard it referred to just as using data, for example.
Helen JohnsonGUEST
3:25
But for me, it's really the either or.
Helen JohnsonGUEST
3:27
And the way that I've seen it evolve is that obviously we had what everybody will know as the shopper marketing phase, which went into the evolution of the retail media phase.
Helen JohnsonGUEST
3:35
And the most recent evolution I've seen is how it's gone from retail media to commerce media, where obviously the people and the partners you were working with for that data or for those inventory touch points were retailers where products could be bought.
Phillip JacksonHOST
0:08
Hey, how's it going?
AliciaHOST
0:10
I'm really excited for today's conversation because if you're a listener or reader, you know that we've been covering... commerce media retail media however you want to define it for the past few weeks now we've had someone from iab on the show um and dove deep into some new trends in the commerce media landscape like vertical dramas and the creator economy um so i'm excited to have someone on the rmn side someone who's doing the work working with partners and really exploring all these different trends uh Philip, what about you? What are your thoughts on how we're tackling this topic? Because I feel like it's so vast, evolving so quickly, and there are so many things to talk about.
AliciaHOST
0:49
But what are you excited to dig into today?
Phillip JacksonHOST
0:51
Well, I think one of the things that's often overlooked is the variety of formats that retail media can actually come in, right? And I think a lot of it's just been focused on display and digital display for so long.
Phillip JacksonHOST
1:03
And one way that I think we could probably zoom out is just think about all the formats and all the ways that people can interact with media.
Phillip JacksonHOST
1:12
Media for many years, if you go back 100 years, media was... you know, terrestrial radio.
Phillip JacksonHOST
1:17
And I think that our next guest has really taken that and made it very literal and thought about what does in-store shopper experience look like when you can't physically look at your phone, but you still want to interact with media and actually deliver value over retail media.
Phillip JacksonHOST
1:32
And how can you turn that into something that's really valuable and point to the other parts of the retail experience, like loyalty.
