Electric Dreams: How Technology Helps Us Make Live Theatre

Um, okay.

So the next one is another show called Rescue Annie, which I made with, uh, Lauren Jones in 2021.
E

So Rescue Annie was a show, uh, which started out as a, an exploration around deepfakes and, uh, um, and, uh, losing your bodily autonomy, where we had planned to bring an audience member up on stage and, uh, kind of deepfake them, so steal their identity and all of those kind of things.

And then COVID happened, so we weren't allowed touch our audience or come anywhere near our audience.

So one of the, the kind of design questions that we were thinking about was how do you physically connect, or how do you connect with an audience when you can't touch them? So we developed this show where we created, uh, so it was a headphone show, um, where this, uh, this is a Resusci Anne doll, um, so one of those CPR dolls, and within the head we had put microphones, uh, or sorry, uh, yeah, microphones, uh, in the ears, which allowed us to create a kind of binaural quality within the, within the, um, within this character on stage.

Um, so, like, a big part of, like, technology and working with technology is that, like, often it doesn't work, and you discover what the limitations are, and those limitations actually become kind of interesting practical problems that, uh, allow you to think about how the work might develop or what might happen next.

So this next show, this is Constantine.

This directly was developed out of a kind of, uh, spitballing of, like, what were the things that we felt didn't work with R- uh, Rescue Annie.
Paris Morgue

And copies of this spread through homes and artist studios.

It really went viral at the time, and her face appeared in literature, in artwork, and it actually inspired the face of Resusci Anne.

You know the CPR training mannequin that you all use when you go get your CPR certification? That is supposedly where her face came from, was from this lady that they pulled from the Seine.
R

Nobody has established who this woman is or even confirmed that this mask was made from someone who drowned and brought to the morgue, and I've heard conflicting stories.
R
33:02RavenHOST
But there is a medical history review that found no police or morgue records supporting the origin story, but the mask and its influence are real, and much of the biography attached to it could be legend.
R
33:16RavenHOST
But the mask could have just been made from someone else.
R
33:19RavenHOST
What we do know is that there is a mask, and it was inspired to make Resusci Anne.

So next time you're doing CPR training, remember the Paris Morgue.
