And I'm not saying that I would disrespect someone else's culture, but I judge a culture by outcomes, right? I look at outcomes.

and I look at what culture has promoted the greatest freedoms in the world, that would be Western culture.

What culture has promoted the most wealth in the world, that would be Western culture.

What culture has produced the most positive outcomes when it comes to, I don't know, that's just economics, inventions, education, you name it across the board.

I mean, we here in the United States are the freest, most educated and, quite frankly, wealthy peoples in the world.

So why wouldn't we want to protect that? Why wouldn't we? I'm not saying everything is perfect.

So let's start with the evidence because this is not opinion.

Okay, so there is now a pretty substantial body of research that tells us exactly which childhood skills and dispositions, character traits, predict adult outcomes.

and the findings consistently point to the same thing.

So let me go through a couple of the research studies to see why these particular skills that we're going to talk about in this episode are so crucial.

So not academic results, not how well they read at seven, self-control, the ability to manage impulses, tolerate frustration and persist through difficulty.

Now, James Heckman, a Nobel Prize winning economist, reached the same conclusion, but from a very different direction.

So James analysed the long-term outcomes of early childhood interventions, and he found that programmes which built non-cognitive skills, so cognitive is the thinking stuff that we tend to think about, the intellectualised things, that our children gain from their schooling and their academics.

But actually, what he found was that programs which built skills such as self-regulation, persistence, emotional resilience, the ability to get along with others, produced dramatically higher returns in adult life outcomes than programs which focus purely on academic skills.
