Reservation Dogs

Yeah.

And, you know, the Take Your Way TV project that I was a huge fan of when it was happening is Reservation Dogs.

Oh, uh-huh,

yeah.

He briefly reprised his role as Nobody from Dead Man in Ghost Dog, The Way of the Samurai.

And on TV, he was in Reservation Dogs, Resident Alien, and he also had a band called Gary Farmer and the Troublemakers.

His subjugation of the native people's movie Blood Quantum, a unique horror film set in a Mi'kmaq reservation where the inhabitants are immune to a zombie plague, serving as a striking allegory for historical displacement, resilience, and sovereignty.

Today's a big day for our team, our fans, a day in which we embark on a new chapter as the Washington Commanders.

We watched Reservation Dogs, Rutherford Falls, and other Native-led productions create Native characters who could be funny and flawed and tender and strange and ambitious and annoying and horny and grieving and fully alive.

We watched more Native people enter writers' rooms.

We had them come on the podcast.

It made me uncomfortable, but it made me love it so much.

Um, and then Reservation Dogs is a series on FX that ran from 2021 to 2023 that had, uh, the Deer Woman in it, and Masters of Horror also included a featurette that was just entitled Deer Woman that told the story of a deer woman, so...

Final thoughts, whether you view the Deer Woman as a cryptid, as a supernatural spirit, or a teaching figure from indigenous oral tradition, she's such an interesting part of North American folklore.

Her stories blur the line between horror, morality, and spirituality, reminding us that folklore often serves a much deeper purpose than simply entertaining or scaring people.

These days, popular TV shows are bringing Native comedic traditions to a wider audience.

Like, the shows Reservation Dogs and Rutherford Falls were either made up by or with the help of Indigenous creators, and much of the worldview represented in them comes from actual lived Native experiences.

I can watch these shows and be like, yep, they get me.

And then there are folks like me, Indigenous content creators bringing Native humor to millions of people online.

Humor like this.

Dakota and Denae actor, comedian, and activist Dallas Goldtooth has said that humor can also be an important tool in reclaiming power from oppressors by letting that joy fuel action.

By the way, Goldtooth is a member of the 1491s, a Native sketch comedy group who posts short online videos and appears in both Reservation Dogs and Rutherford Falls.
