So I am part of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service.

So I've been in now 25, coming up 26 years.

I'm based in Colchester, a place called Lexton, and I'm at a special urban search and rescue station.

So you're part of a bit of an elite group.

Yeah, so USAR is for the UK, so it's Urban Search and Rescue.

So we were set up, as I say, after the Twin Towers.

Estimates of exactly how many lives Wallenberg personally saved vary widely, so the safest conclusion is that he and his network helped protect tens of thousands.

Rescue arithmetic is tricky because several people may have saved the same person at different moments.

Then the rescuer needed rescuing.

On January 17, 1945, Wallenberg left Budapest with his driver, Vilmos Langfelder, intending to meet Soviet commanders in Debrecen and discuss aid for survivors.

So search and rescue is controlled by the, um, Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand, RCCNZ, and they've changed some of their regulations that affect the maritime rescue and also aviation, um, assets, or as we call them, a asset.

Um, and that had meant that where we had been flying under one regulation, we no longer would qualify for that, and we wouldn't meet the new standards because of being, um, a volunteer organization effectively.

That is Andrew Lamb, who is the president of the Coastguard's Auckland Air Patrol.

He is a volunteer, and their volunteer pilots have basically been benched just because of the change in safety requirements.

We have been in touch with Coastguard, who says its decision isn't a reflection on its air patrol volunteers, but because Maritime New Zealand's Rescue Coordination Centre introduced new standards for search and rescue operations last year.

They require more formal safety management systems, stricter maintenance, and structured crew training and checking.

And, uh, in keeping with, uh, your special guest tonight and the theme of the net, I'd like to mention that, um, my long association with my cabin, which is in Big Santa Anita Canyon, that is the area which was the birthplace and the home canyon, if you will, of the Sierra Madre Search and Rescue team.

The recruit class is re- is required to complete EMT Basic NFPA 1001, which is the standard of firefighter professional qualifications for those who don't know.

Uh, includes HAZMAT awareness and operations and an emergency vehicle operations course.

Recruits receive pro board certification for Firefighter 1 and 2 HAZMAT awareness and operations through the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute Upon graduation from the 10-month academy, recruits are assigned to a suppression company where they work their initial suppression assignment for 10 24-hour shifts.

Once they have t- once they have completed the 10 shifts at their suppression assignment, they are detailed to a company with the opposite firefighting discipline, so engine or truck, for four more 24-hour shifts.
