Republic of Texas

He worked himself to death.

He accepted the office of Secretary of State in the newly formed Republic of Texas.

He is our first Secretary of State.

I've been in the formal offices several times and even been at a conference or two at the big table under the official painting of Stephen F. Austin, the father of Texas.

what does that even mean

like this is dumb like sure i owe you a billion dollars i'll pay you later it's crazy you know whatever um so he also was involved in in texas and how the texas becomes texas republic the last day of andrew jackson's presidency he will um recognize the republic of texas as a country um and as far as like as slavery goes while he's president it's not like in any of his like bills or anything but he does like at one point there's a newspaper for abolitionists and he orders everyone who subscribes to it to have their name listed publicly which is like dangerous and definitely a threat you know um There's more things that he did.

Eventually, Andrew Jackson is going to get attacked in his last term as president by a man who wants to kill him.

He tries to shoot him twice and the gun doesn't work.

In 1943, the middle of the Holocaust and the Second World War, the largest synagogue in the American South, Beth Israel of Houston, Texas, the oldest synagogue in Texas, it actually dates to before Texas joined the Union.

So it dates to the Republic of Texas.

You know, if you know sort of Reform Jews in these kinds of cities, these are the most respectable, the most middle class.

These aren't people that are looking for a fight, right? This is like the establishment of the Jewish world.

And it's really fascinating.

It was basically Texas's first foray, the Republic of Texas, their first foray into international diplomatic property.

So what year would that have been? It was established in 18...

1839 or 1840.

It was a lot of different places and it really depended on where battles were happening and where it looked like they might go to, because then they'd be like, actually, we're going to move over

here.

So, uh, every, you know, like, the world was so fluid before the end of world war ii and i think that's something that gets lost a lot of time but uh he said hey okay like i'm gonna be in houston we're doing this whole deal he kind of got a reputation for like whining and dining politicians and having these like big parties and stuff he's a big party guy it was like the the first like republic of texas like really high-end um Oh, my gosh.

What is it? You know, like the people that are on Capitol Hill, like lobbyists.

So she passed away December 26th, 1919 in the house.

And her father was a big figure in the battle for the Republic of Texas for Texas independence from Mexico.

And after that was done, Texas was a republic.

Later on, I guess he was involved with a fighting force called Terry's Texas Rangers.
