India Republic Day

This happened on 27th of January.

And so 26th January is India's Republic Day.

And there's a big party in this village that is completely locked.

You know, there's so much snow that there are no roads in or out of the village.

But everyone 20 years ago, people thought private education meant elite education.

education private education for the the at least the middle classes and above not the poor and my life was frustrating because i wanted my life 20 years ago to be about serving the poor anyway i had a hunch about what i might found i'd read in my rough guide to india that the slums of the old city were behind the charminar and one day on a on actually on i think it was a republic day a holiday Away from my consultancy work for the World Bank, IFC, International Finance Corporation, which I was doing in the posh schools in Hyderabad, I went into the slums of the old city and I heard children playing.

I followed where they were leading down alleyway after alleyway and I found a school.

And in that school, there were children learning.

It's too dangerous.

So I got a canoe and went in to the shanty town itself.

And there it was actually, again, that was Republic Day before.

This was now Independence Day in Nigeria.

Like, I think I need to be in a specific state of mind.

Typically, it has to be around Independence Day or Republic Day.

I don't.

Uh, and I think, uh, this is, uh, an important one, I mean, from the point of view of what we are doing.

Uh, the India-EU FTA, which was of course two, two decades in the making, but kind of accelerated since twenty twenty-two and we could conclude it, uh, with the, with the European Union president and the commissioner, uh, making it as a chief guest of the Republic Day celebrations on the twenty-sixth of January, and then they conclu- they signed the agreement the following day.

And s- and, and, uh, pleasantly four or five days later, um, we also, uh, have the outline of a trade deal with the United States, which will remove the tariff rates from fifty percent, bring it down to eighteen percent.

And therefore, once again, I would say, uh, considerations of China Plus One will be back on track.

Similarly, I took a ride on the earliest, earliest prototypes or of Arjun tank in Awadi, and I was told that this tank will be in regimental service next year.

Since then, it has mostly been a Republic Day tank.

And the question in my mind has always been that our country has such great strength in automotive production.

We make trucks, we make cars, we make- we make vehicles of all kinds.

Mm-hmm.

26 January is when we celebrate our Republic Day.
