In the 1940s, psychiatrist Rene Spitz studied infants in institutional care, children who were fed, sheltered, and kept physically safe, but who received almost no physical affection or touch from their caregivers.

The results were striking and heartbreaking.

Despite having their basic needs met, many of these infants failed to thrive, and they became withdrawn, and they fell behind in developmental stages, and their immune systems weakened, and in the most severe cases, some didn't survive.
