Today, we're taking a close look at the Rendlesham Forest incident, Britain's Roswell, and separating what evidence actually shows from the legend that grew around it.

The first time I heard the name Rendlesham Forest, I imagined a Victorian ghost story set among pine trees until I realized it was tied to a Cold War-era base.

The incident happened at the very edge of RAF Woodbridge and RAF Bentwaters, two United States Air Force stations in Suffolk, England.

It's become known as Britain's Roswell because the accounts were eerily similar to the US UFO narrative that took root in the 1940s.

Some researchers note a faint burn scar on the forest floor where a meteor would likely land.

Despite all those natural explanations, the incident grew into something larger because of the media and subsequent speculation.

A few years after the tape was recorded, a documentary series named UFO Hunters revived interest and added dramatized reenactments that amplified the mystery.

At RAF Fylingdales and other early warning posts, pilots reported objects on their screens that defied conventional explanation, feeding into rumors of secret military drones.

Those reports were quickly followed by the Rendlesham Forest incident.

Several nights of sightings, one involving Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt, who swore he saw a craft with a glass-like surface.

Records from RAF personnel and audio from the so-called Halt tape were later released to the public.

The only thing they couldn't find was the object itself.

Now, often referred to as Britain's Roswell, the Rendlesham Forest incident is arguably the most significant and heavily documented UFO encounter in European history.

What elevates this case above typical civilian sightings is the caliber of the witnesses and the location where it occurred.

In December 1980, RAF Bentwaters and RAF Woodbridge were twin military bases in Suffolk, England, leased to the United States Air Force.

Now, following the events, Lieutenant Colonel Halt drafted an official memorandum titled Unexplained Lights, detailing the encounters of both December 26 and December 28.

He submitted it to the UK Ministry of Defense.

This memo is the smoking gun of the Rendlesham Forest incident.

It's not a blurry photograph or a secondhand story.

Yeah.

Now, one of the problems with the Rendlesham Forest incident, you know, there are a few, is that there are a lot of witnesses who say conflicting things about who was there, who was where, and when and who observed what.

For example, we mentioned them at the top of the show, there's an entire other figure that we haven't discussed yet, named U.S. Security Officer Airman Larry Warren, who was at the time of the Rendlesham Forest incident, 19 years old.

And he claims that he was present during this two to three hour period where Halt and his men were chasing these lights around.

And I think he was part of if you're to believe that he was there, that he was part of the crew setting up the Lyles.

And Mack, what are we talking about today?

Well, we're gonna try again to do the, uh, somewhat iconic, if not, um, the first or second or third place, um, kind of Roswell story around the world, which is in Britain, the n- sort of known as the Rendlesham Forest incident.

So that's where we're going with it.

I mean, there's a lot of stuff that happened there, seriously reported sightings, some unexplained lights, um, a landed craft.

I'm looking forward to diving into it.

It, I am familiar with this story, but I've not seen this particular video, so here we go.

[tense music] The Rendlesham Forest incident was set in motion on the night of December 26, 1980, when two security patrolmen, John Burroughs and Jim Penniston, first caught sight of the peculiar lights in the sky.

As they monitored the perimeter of the RAF Woodbridge base, they were drawn to the unusual display of lights hovering above the forest.

A 2015 French economic study found UFO sightings clustered around the La Hague nuclear reprocessing plant.

The 1980 Rendlesham Forest case in the United Kingdom took place near a nuclear weapons storage facility.

In the United States, the 1967 Malmstrom Air Force Base case in Montana involved several nuclear missiles reportedly going offline shortly after a UFO was seen near the silos.

That pattern, appearing across three countries and five decades, is exactly the kind of infrastructure risk that both the Malaysian astronomers and the European pilots in this story raised on their own without any coordination between them.
