that? So one thing that happened not too soon after I got my lecturing job at the University of Waikato was the Rena oil spill.

happened here and so there were a few people around who weren't in psychology but they were in social work or working for Toi Ohomai so we got together and we were interested in that volunteer response because if you were here in Tauranga at that time you'll know how people rush down to the beach to pick up oil and things like that so we were interested in why did they do that what did they get out of it you know that sort of thing so that was one of the opportunistic research programs that came up.

Before that, actually, before I got my proper job at the university, we decided to move.

So a lot of people just do very theoretical, pure research, and that's great.

But I wanted to see that it had an effect on the world, I suppose.

So I did the Rena stuff.

That was quite environmental anyway because that was to do with a natural – not a natural disaster, a human-made disaster –
