Regret

As a matter of fact, the, the commitment for the future is not even as important as the regret.

It's amazing.

Regret-

The different things.

There's different things going on

... regret is teshuva.

Regret is teshuva.

Now, there's a- additional pieces to it that a person should regret, say a viddui, and make a commitment for the future.

It's, it's absolutely wild.

It make me regret, uh, or as Northern Irish people might say, regrat-

... uh, [laughs] regrat, um, not getting tickets to see it, 'cause I had, I had my Oasis live experiences.

I saw them in Slane in '95-

Repentance isn't a temporary feeling of remorse.

You know, regret looks at the consequences of sin, but repentance looks at the offense of sin against a holy God.

Regret says, "I'm sorry I got caught." That's not repentance.

Repentance says, "I'm grieved." That I betrayed my creator, and I'm turning around, I'm changing my mind about who God is and who I am in relationship to Him.

So repentance is a 180-degree turn in direction.

So let's rewind just a bit.

Regret feels productive.

It does.

You see something, a tattoo that you want to remove, and you feel like you're doing something.

It's real and should not be bypassed.

But past that initial recognition, regret does not need to be a place or to have a place in your life because regret compounds.

Regret becomes a relationship with the past that you return to again and again, not because returning produces anything worth a darn, but because the returning is how you're holding yourself accountable.

You're saying if I feel bad about this, it begins to seem like feeling bad is accomplishing something.

It was called to turn away from the sin on which its power had been constructed.

Biblical prenten- pres- uh, repentance is more than regret.

Regret says, "I don't like the consequences of what I've done." Remorse says, "The f- I feel the pain of what I've done." But repentance says, "By the grace of God, I'm turning from the way that I have lived." It is rooted in a new and bigger imagination and understanding of reality.

The Hebrew word often associated with repentance means to turn or to return.

The New Testament word metanoia means to have a reorientation, a new life, a new understanding, a bigger imagination.

... as valuable at all.

Regret is the hardest.

It was so hard for me to see the value of regret.

Hmm.

This is where spiritual wisdom is so important because if not, we move through our lives full of grudges, full of guilt, ruining our present because of the past.

But regret, on the other hand, regret can be actually really useful.

Regret says, "Ugh, I kind of blew it.

That was not a wise decision." Not I am stupid, lazy, worthless.

Not a comment on who I am, but simply a comment on a choice that I made.

You see, regret says, well, I hate what this has cost me.

Did you just hear that? Let me say it again.

Regret says, I hate what this has cost me.

You heard it that time, right? Okay.

Remorse says, I am beginning to understand what I've done to you.
