Joel SharptonHOST

He was at a Q&A event with Kevin Smith for Red State.
Joel SharptonHOST

And they were in New Orleans together doing like a Q, they showed the movie and then did a Q&A afterwards.
Joel SharptonHOST
22:14
And so I got to see him answer a few questions in person, which was like one of the highlights.

you know? And it just started off from, like, this one legitimate complaint that these people had, you know, to this whole other just hateful, like, mission.
Jose LopezHOST
58:32
you know um so it was kind of it's interesting seeing how that dude's documentary not only done so well but very well written um and it you know his apology uh and it traced like the whole story but you can see like from my like perspective somebody who's seen the louis thoreau uh uh documentaries too that whole arc from like everybody involved like how one by one people leaving the church and then starting to speak against it and stuff And they kind of touch on in the documentary, huh? About how this inspired other like works such as red state, you know? Um, so it's just, it's, it's, it's pretty good.
Jose LopezHOST
59:09
It's a pretty good watch.
Jose LopezHOST

Fidel MedinaHOST
70:29
Yeah.
Fidel MedinaHOST
70:31
That's why Red State is a documentary.
Jose LopezHOST
70:33
for real huh yeah and we talked about that we had an episode where we talked about that so i mean if anybody's interested in watching checking out these documentaries um and it could be a good way to kind of segue into watching that film you know if those who had who had heard the episode maybe hadn't seen it yet
Carson TimarHOST
128:59
But with that, Jack, let's go to our question of the week.
Carson TimarHOST
129:02
we're towards the end of the spooky season i asked this with hillary at the start of our series and now at the end if anyone is looking for some um random horror recommendation maybe something they haven't seen before what would we recommend i will start because i have a film i never thought i would ask this question which we've asked every single year and i never thought i would recommend a kevin smith film but here we are i watched red state for the first time which is like debatable I guess at times if it's horror or not it has more of like a thriller element to it I was so caught off guard here I knew nothing about the movie and it's one that just continually is shifting and evolving it genuinely has some great performances John Goodman is fantastic here but really looking at this post 9-11 hate in America there's a lot to be said in this film there is a lot it is trying to do it's a film that would not be made nowadays at all And it's one that's also really hard to get hold of, but it's now streaming a few places.
Carson TimarHOST
130:03
So I was really happy to watch this and I would recommend go check out Red State, anyone.
Carson TimarHOST
130:07
I think it is like, don't expect a normal Kevin Smith film.
Carson TimarHOST
130:10
It is something very different, but something very worthwhile.
Alex ChungGUEST
30:19
Kevin Smith is tricky because he's had...
Alex ChungGUEST
30:25
Red State, no. It's
LawsonHOST
30:26
definitely not Red State.
LawsonHOST
30:28
Also Spielberg.
LawsonHOST
30:30
It's the original Clerks.
TrentHOST
43:42
Tusk.
TrentHOST
43:43

BrainsHOST
43:44
Hey, Tusk.
JayHOST
43:45
It, it was, uh-
BrainsHOST
43:45
Jake Gyllenhaal was in that too
JayHOST
43:46
...
JayHOST
43:46
he was in Red State.
BrainsHOST
43:47
Or, what, was he? Was it?
Alice Genevra-McKellyGUEST

[laughs]
Aaron DicerHOST
32:27
Uh, number eight, Red State.
Alice Genevra-McKellyGUEST
32:30

Aaron DicerHOST
32:30
Uh, the Kevin Smith movie.
Aaron DicerHOST
32:32

Alice Genevra-McKellyGUEST

MikeHOST
52:35
It's a horror entry.
MikeHOST
52:37
And I also, a movie I quite like, I don't think gets enough love is Kevin Smith's Red State.
JayHOST
52:44
Oh, I love that movie.
MikeHOST
52:45
About a cult, right? This fundamentalist pastor and these kids kind of get lured into it.
JayHOST
53:20
comedy horror kind of and it's not really like true comedy.
JayHOST
53:25
It's it's almost like absurdist laughing at the situation while you're aghast at the same time.
JayHOST
53:31
I will say that Red State to me is one of the most underrated films ever.
JayHOST
53:36
period like it's probably his best directorial effort i'm not saying it's his best movie necessarily yeah but in terms of the filmmaking yeah and it's a tight script it's it's got a really interesting final act so i like it it's just the tonally those two movies even though the same guy couldn't be for me more a part
SaulHOST
3:31
He's in Quentin Tarantino movies.
SaulHOST
3:33
He was in Red State also, written and directed by-
AlyHOST
3:37
Controversial movie though, right?
SaulHOST
3:39
... by Kevin Smith.
DrewHOST
10:40
villainize it in so many different ways.
DrewHOST
10:43
Have you ever seen Red State? No.
DrewHOST
10:45
Oh, you guys got to see Red State.
DrewHOST
10:47
That was when Kevin Smith was doing his string of horror movies.
DrewHOST
10:50
I have seen that.
David DenoyerGUEST
10:36
But somebody would definitely make that into a comic.
David DenoyerGUEST
10:39
I think if you wanna get some primo Michael Parks, um, two movies that I'd recommend would be Kevin Smith's Red State, where he plays basically- Yep ...
David DenoyerGUEST
10:47
the leader of a church.
David DenoyerGUEST
