The next film we're going to be looking at is Red Rooms from 2023.

Right, so, fucking hell, Red Rooms.

Massively hyped when it started appearing at festivals.

And that is sort of like a very granular working through of, you know, from a queer perspective Again, it's the trying to love something that doesn't love you back about Sleepaway Camp and this idea like, you know, what is problematic about it, what is kind of revelatory about it, like the stain of these images in sort of like both positive and negative ways.

slashes have survived and have become such a potent sub-genre of horror because of um the the readings of spectators with different kind of backgrounds and identities like if if you took every slasher like purely on face value you'd be like this is weak stuff but like it becomes so rich because of like this kind of um um the culture around it um which is kind of more the subject of camp miasma than the slashers themselves in a way it's kind of like the culture of like the slasher film and what the slasher film came to mean is um is so important for queer film theory um so it kind of has this like um the the kind of the the paratextual elements of the film and like I think that's what the ephemera sequence at the beginning is speaking to it's like the the place of it has in culture the place like this genre has in culture and therefore like the importance of the spectator is the the kind of true subject in a way of of all of the film theory about slashers um one of the films I was going to talk about was Red Rooms because that's a film that came out in 2023 and it's kind of like on face value it's like not really to do with a slasher it doesn't have like the hallmarks of a slasher in a lot of ways but what it's about is like it's this young woman in Canada who is a model and she has this over investment in a serial killer who is a, a male serial killer who is on trial.

And so it's like, it's, it's a fusion of like a courtroom drama and an erotic thriller and a horror film.

And it's, it's like a bunch of things quite, it's quite hard to pin down genre wise and, um but for me i mean in relationship to the slasher like in in real life this is what a slasher is right it's like a serial killer who's like pursuing young women and so it's kind of like a literalization or like a bringing into like the real quote-unquote real world of um of like the fantasy of a slasher And I think it is, for me, Red Rooms is, like, the absolute perfect girls watching films film.

Because it's, like, she doesn't watch films in it, but what she does watch is, like, she watches, like, snuff videos.

And she's got this, like, utterly ambivalent relationship to them.

These are classics for a reason.

Red Rooms, a film from last year or the year before, is less explicitly about accidentally finding a record of a murder, but it is a pretty powerful and disturbing French-Canadian film.

And not just because of that, about a woman who's like... terminally online who gets sort of drawn into some of

the true crime discussions we talked about of like what is your relationship to suffering that you're finding out about secondhand drawn

Very different, of course, reactions in those particular cases.

Definitely thought of Red Rooms when I was watching Furious.

Absolutely.

I'm thinking about showing my wife Red Rooms, but I'm not sure if she will get much out of it because it's pretty dark.

It's pretty full on.

But yeah, what a film.

My third pick, I'm going to go with a movie that I think is really timely for right now.

But really all the time, that'll be Red Rooms.

But it's a it's perfect for right now obviously with the you know lindsey lindsey clients trial going on but really every single year in america in the world there's like a case uh that goes viral that everyone chimes in on and everyone kind of consumes their entire life and you know

there's just always a new new legal matter of the day that people are going to be really obsessing over and i think red rooms really dives into the psyche of true crime and i don't think true crime like ryan and i had a big debate about this this week but like you know true crime is it is it all bad all good and i think it's one of those things that you know like i think a lot of people can enjoy true crime and have it not be an issue and i think there's certain people like red rooms really dives into that it just really can lead you down this path where you just become completely obsessive so red room's really good really dark gritty thriller hard to watch certainly especially towards the end but uh great performances i can't think of her name is it julia panoche no julia gareppi

right well i'm going to go with my next pick and i'm going to dive over to the french side of things and i am picking a film also somewhat of a recent one from 2023 and that is pascal plant's red rooms This is a techno thriller horror film, however you want to categorize it, starring Juliette Garepy about a young woman who, you know, her day job is a model, but in reality, she is following this.

trial of a murder that i don't really want to spoil here but basically she kind of plays a elizabeth salander type of character um where you know she infiltrates you know the dark web underground rings things like that to find out information and you don't totally know what she wants with this information or what her end goal is But the depth that she goes to get this information shows off the really dark side of humanity that still exists today.

Well, this is a contemporary film, so it does absolutely exist today.

So that's not too shocking, but it's fine when they're really good.

Yeah.

And if people are interested, Vinegar Syndrome did release Red Rooms on physical media, so they do still have the standard edition available.

Yeah, I remember when this came out, the limited edition basically sold out right away because it was such a hot item for the film collecting community.

And I, like, these are two movies that, like, genuinely scare me.

And one of them's, uh, uh, one of them's Red Rooms, which came out recently, which is, like, the first, I think, like, real true horror experience of, like, the current, uh, E-age, so to speak, or the I-age, you know, whatever.

Um, uh, I, I, I, I got myself in plenty of situations where, like, computer virus...

I was just, like, on a meme website back when those were a thing, like, about, like, 15 years ago, and getting my dodgy memes from these things.

... unparalleled to anything.

That is genuinely like a ghost in the computer.

So, and Red Rooms, I think the way it's shot and the way it feels spooks me.

And the next one is, and this is one where I, you know, I, I don't know if people will classify it as a horror movie, but it's Jonathan Glazer's Birth.

Then we got weapons.

Red Rooms, 28 years later, that's crazy.

I think Bone Temple was better than 28 years later.

Yeah, Bone Temple was better.

So where the fuck is Bone Temple? But for now, yeah, I think this is pretty solid.
