Even though it has never been clearly mentioned who afflicted these scars on him, based on what we know, the injuries likely came from his battle against the Red Hair Pirates.

Now, since we know that he didn't fight Shanks directly, it was likely Ben Beckman who badly scarred Kid during this battle.

He's the crew's vice captain after all, and probably its strongest member besides Shanks himself.

I'm really interested to know their capabilities.

But even more so, I want the Red Hair Pirates to come back.

I really got my fingers crossed for that Davy Back Fight.

I mean, so that's another way that this arc ends, or at least this fight ends against Emu, is the red-haired pirates come and Shanks kind of stands up against... emu and emu is like i hate you because you like tricked me and yeah i think that he that is another way where like he fends off emu and sends him back to marie joie

i can't wait i think this is really heating up i really really really want to see just the davey back fight between the red hair pirates and the straw hats so that they can both be strong warriors of the sea right luffy comes back to shanks as a great pirate we get to see that storyline fulfilled and then moving forward we can focus all attention to preparing for the final battle

well i mean how else are they going to compete against the red hair pirates to show them that luffy's assembled a great crew and become a brave warrior of the sea Why do they have to compete? What makes the red-haired pirates different than any other pirate crew that, you know, is powerful, that like... luffy is allied with and the straw hats are allied with like but like why would he have to fight the red hair pirates

The Beast Pirates began their journey back to Wano, but a certain someone was missing from the ship.

Using his wings, Luffy discreetly sneaked off the Beast Pirates ship and boarded the Red-Haired Pirates ship.

Luffy was caught pretty quickly and began fighting off a few of the grunts who were trying to capture him.

This was until Ben Beckman and Shanks himself showed up, causing the pirates to stop in their tracks.

To see the state of the world, he asked Shanks if he could travel with him.

After thinking things over and understanding that Luffy had the potential to become a great pirate, Shanks decided to make him a part of his crew.

For the next few months, Luffy would go on to follow the Red-Haired Pirates and train under them.

During this time, Shanks grew fond of Luffy and realized that he had the potential to be as strong as a Yonko.

We can assume he manages to swim far enough from the location where the Sea King chows down on Haguma for Shanks to jump in and save him without having to sacrifice his arm this time.

Later on, when the Red Hair Pirates are leaving, Luffy has the same conversation with Shanks about becoming a great pirate one day.

While Shanks is still fond of the kid, he doesn't feel quite as responsible for him as he does canonically since Luffy's just a normal kid.

Mainly because of this, while Shanks still encourages Luffy and tells him they'll meet again when he's stronger, he doesn't give Luffy the straw hat that would otherwise become part of his trademark look.
