Rebuild Foundation

Formerly St. Lawrence Elementary School, the building was shuttered in 2002 and sat empty for over a decade.

Then-artist Theaster Gates and the Rebuild Foundation transformed it into a cultural and community hub for artists, makers, and the Grand Crossing neighborhood on Chicago's South Side.

Gates calls the process space redemption, not tearing down and starting over, but examining and reexamining what is already there and how it can be transformed into something new and meaningful for the community as it stands.

Maz did that with Colaschone the winter, listening, iterating, improvising, and creating for the moment.
