No, not at all.
MattHOST
10:50
And to that extent, remember Raymond Palmer, who actually deliberately didn't fact-check and published outlandish things like the Shaver Mysteries.
MattHOST
11:00
And so you have this brewing pot full of real accounts, outright lies, unintentional mistakes, and intentional journalistic deception.
MattHOST
11:11
Yeah.
EJHOST
11:19
They were presenting them as deception, not as true news?
MattHOST
11:23

stories? Right, so first the Shaver Mysteries, as they called them, appeared in amazing stories published by Raymond Palmer back in the early 40s.
Adam GorightlyGUEST

Palmer, the editor, got a letter one day from this Richard Shaver character who claimed that as his job as an arc welder at a shipyard or I think he also worked at a Ford factory at one time or another he was using his arc welder set up and over that he heard voices started hearing voices and over time he became to believe these were creatures named the Deeros that had long lived on earth going back hundreds of thousands of years there was what we called the atlans that were extraterrestrials that came to earth and the sun's rays started affecting them in a bad manner and they had to move into the inner earth and they created these great civilizations with all this uh advanced technology and whatnot but the sun rays started seeping into the inner earth too and driving them mad and what uh the atlans that could bug bug out and uh on their own spaceships and get out leave earth they did but uh the ones that were left behind were called the abandoned euros or the duros for short and they became these over time these uh insane devolved uh deformed creatures that lived in the earth with all this old machinery and these uh ray beams as they called them that they would use to basically uh screw with the inhabitants above ground of earth by sending these beams at them to drive them mad and also these tales of abducting our inducting earth women and human hybrid experiments and all this wild story.

But these Shaver mysteries soon became a phenomenon.

Raymond Palmer, the editor of Amazing Stories, claimed that, you know, and so did Shaver, that these were true stories.
Adam GorightlyGUEST
15:07
And they started getting other people writing into the magazine about seemingly confirming they had their own encounters with Deiros.
Adam GorightlyGUEST
15:15
And one of these people was Fred Chrisman, who in May of 46, wrote anonymously about an encounter he'd had with the Deiros during World War II.

Just a few weeks after he submitted his article to Fate, he started writing to other outlets and clubs, looking for a place to kinda plant his flag.
MattHOST

And as luck would have it, one of Barker's magazine subscriptions was for Outer Worlds, another Raymond Palmer periodical.
MattHOST
47:22
And okay, let's get some more context on this now 'cause these magazines, they're not really like anything that we have in America today.
MattHOST
47:31
Um, I suppose you could consider them men's magazines, but that calls up things like Playboy, which isn't quite right.
