Sociologist Ray Oldenburg spent his career studying something most of us have never thought to name.

He called it the third place.

But w- when work becomes only work and family, there's a part of us that goes missing.

That's the third place.

So Ray Oldenburg argued that healthy communities and healthy individuals need to be really anchoring three spaces.

The first place is home, the private world.

The second is work, the place of obligation and productivity.

And basically, he came up with this idea that your first place is home, your second place is work, and your third place is where you go to just exist around other people.

Now, historically, those places were the mall or church or community centers, local parks, a diner, bowling alleys.

Third places in person are one of the few environments that create consistent opportunities for this in-person contact without requiring formal social effort.

If a regular-degular person cannot afford it, it is not a third space anymore.

They should be open and inviting spaces that kind of feel like home, unpretentious, not expensive, convenient, and where conversation is the main activity.

Just because there's a DJ there spinning on vinyls does not make it a third space.
