The ultimate soul-crushing saying for any parent trying to do a better job raising their kids than their own parents did raising them.

And it seems to echo eternally through King's books, through his gallery of bad, evil dads like Randall Flagg in The Stand, to Bob Anderson in A Good Marriage, a monstrous man who ruins his family because of his sick internal urges.

Over and over again in King's books, these monstrous bad dads ruin their families.

But the one bad dad to rule them all is Jack Torrance in The Shining.

As a reference, yes.

To elevate a fictional rabbit to the same villainous pantheon as his own supernatural antagonists, like Randall Flagg, is a profound homage.

That speaks to how effectively Adams crafted that character's menace.

But then, on the completely opposite side of the aesthetic spectrum, we have Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice.

Why is that?

Because this is the book that introduces and really fleshes out Randall Flagg, this demonic, chaotic villain who weaves his way through many of King's other universes and series, like the Dark Tower.
