now let us speak of water for in much of the maya lowlands water held a particular kind of magic precious and sometimes elusive unlike regions blessed with great flowing rivers Much of the Yucatan Peninsula sits atop a vast shelf of limestone, porous and ancient, laid down over millions of years by shallow seas that once covered this land.

Rainwater falling upon this limestone does not pool easily on the surface.

Instead, it seeps downward, finding its way through countless cracks and channels, carving hidden rivers that flow invisibly beneath the earth.

This underground world eventually reveals itself in one of the most remarkable features of the Maya landscape, the cenote.

Nobody had used it for months.

Rainwater collected in the bottom, along with leaves and bits of bark.

A deer was standing beside it.
