I'm keen to hear Ewan's what thoughts, first of all, both on the way Martin O'Neill is messaging about this situation, but also about the selection itself.
E
9:45Euan DavidsonGUEST
Yeah, I, I think if there were any criticisms of Martin O'Neill's first, um, first spell, uh, and there maybe really were only a couple, um, I don't really think we ever had, uh, I mean, Rab Douglas accepted for the majority of the time he was in goals.

And I, 'cause he did, he had a major problem the first time around when he was manager with goalkeepers.
T
39:40Tony HaggertyPANELIST
He rotated between three, didn't he: Rab Douglas, Magnus Hedman, and Javi Sánchez Broto, and Broto was the best out the three of them.
J
39:47John McGinleyHOST
Right.
T
39:48Tony HaggertyPANELIST
Yet, and Broto was pitched in at Ibrox, and Celtic won 2-1.

I think that was the, the beach ball game.
T

Somebody correct me in the, uh, if I'm wrong, but he certainly came through it with flying colors, and then was ineligible to play in the UEFA Cup final 'cause they'd signed him after the deadline, in a typical Celtic fashion.
T
40:07Tony HaggertyPANELIST
So Rab Douglas went in goal for UEFA Cup final.
T

But yeah, he'd a, he had a real kind of, I don't know, blind spot or an Achilles heel when it came to goalkeepers.

A lot of the sort of more media-friendly ones are kind of... already tied to Sky Sports or you know Alex Ray to Clyde One etc etc so I'm trying to speak to some guys who played in that game getting insight on how winning that first cup game spurred them on to to the league one and the next one but um I initial discussions have went well so hopefully we'll have something out um tomorrow at some point um on what one of those guys had to say

that's fantastic that was a a pivotal game in changing our fortunes that year because we were going again down that time downward spiral again and that boom everything changed from them um so yeah that'd be fantastic if you do if you do speak to gregory venial um if he remembers a bloke a school boy shouting at him in mulgay while he was in the tanning salon holding up a ranger scarf going yes after or not long after that game at Parkhead where he made Rab Douglas look like an absolute fool, then just let him know that was Andrew from the iVox channel.

the guys that broke through really and because even when we were at that time when we the famous day when B Scott McDonald did for Celtic with two goals past Rab Douglas and Celtic blew the league and all that see if you can look back at the Motherwell team there we were still I think effectively in administration in terms of dotting the I's and crossing the T's right and when you look at which is why Celtic had no excuses that day they did of your 30 grand a week players and all that right Celtic bottled it that day big style there's no doubt about that but when if you look back the Skippy Sunday as it became known look at the Motherwell team that day I think Gerry Britton was on the bench he was he was on the pitch he was on the pitch was

And goalkeepers have always, to an extent, when it comes to Celtic, been a wee bit of a kryptonite for Martyn O'Neill.
T
21:27TinoHOST
people will look at maybe Rab Douglas and Seville harsh as that sounds I thought Rab Douglas did a pretty decent job overall for Celtic and he continues to be a great ambassador for Celtic but Was he the best we could have done with him? Could we maybe have done something with a different goalie? We nearly had Javier Sanchez-Broto before he moved on, and a few others, but as I say, Martynu never quite nailed the goalkeeper position first time around, and maybe it's something that's hovering over him this time around.
T
21:56TinoHOST
So we'll find out in due course in the coming days if Celtic do anything about it.

If you look 25 years ago, uh, Rab Douglas, Javier Sánchez Broto, Magnus Hedman, even last season with, with Kasper Schmeichel, you felt like kind of that went on for too long.

You don't want to be in a position again this season where, you know, you look at Sinisa Lo and say, "Why did we not bring in a first choice?" But again, uh, the only way he can prove himself at this level is by being given that opportunity.
