Quest for Fire

Maximum Overdrive may have been the most chaotic movie I ever worked on.

And considering that I'm a veteran of a movie called Deathbed, the bed that eats people, and Quest for Fire, that's saying something.

Officially, Jock Brandes was the movie's best boy, which is a job in the grip department.

But to hear him tell the crowd that night, he did a lot more than that.

She's the, you know, billionth great-grandmother of John Connor and this time it's, you know, all the awesome might of technology against someone who doesn't e- they've, they've just discovered fire.

You know what I'm saying? So there's, there's-- it's, it's the ultimate underdog in a Terminator story and you get to go back in time and see, you know, one of my favorite movies is Quest for Fire.

It's like an early eighties action sort of fantasy about these cavemen trying to find fire because their tribe is dying and I just want more movies that are about prehistoric times and I think if you could figure-- I got the whole plot and if anybody wants to ask me about it, they can email me, but I'm sure they won't.

But this is my mo- this is my most favorite thing to think about in the shower and like when I'm going to bed and I'm just like, "Okay, if I just try to think about this plot and what happens next." Got the whole plot in my head and I'm always fine-tuning it and putting it into an outline.

Where Eagles Dare, The Trooper, Die With Your Boots On, Quest For Fire.

Great album.

Awesome album.

And I remember he sketched me and then I didn't like the nose.

And I had just done Quest for Fire, which won the very first special effects makeup Oscar in the year they had the category started.

Yeah.

And so I was like Mr. Prosthetics guy.

Gotcha.

Yeah.

I am going to go with quest for fire from 1981 directed by the French from France director Jean-Jacques.

I know, but it is a Canadian film.

starring Ray Dawn Chong, among other people.

We know we always love those, which historically have always been quite silly.

You know, Raquel Welch in her fur bikini and all that stuff.

Quest for Fire is an attempt to be, I guess, historically accurate for a time that we have no actual recollection or recording of.

And it's done so well that it really does feel like time traveling back to the days of early human civilization, right? The title is the plot, which is that they lose their central fire and they don't know how to make it.

I can easily double that.

I've got about 34. on a list already for you i'll send you that list uh anybody listening can check out our uh uh letterboxd watch list we've got about 200 movies uh some of them are pretty tangentially related to our topic one of the problems with a lot of these movies is that they're so obscure i have no idea how to find them to watch so if anybody has any ideas to find some obscure movies It probably wouldn't be a good podcast for me to just read out 35 movies for you, but I want to offer you a few interesting titles here.

So first of all, this is a new one you couldn't have known, but there's a new movie we just reviewed called In the Blink of an Eye.

Have you heard of that one? Not yet.

But his writing room also inc- included the greats like Carl Reiner, Neil Simon, and Larry Gelbart.

So this was released the same year as two other films that had a prehistoric drama, like Quest for Fire and comedy Caveman.

And then we also have the legendary jazz percussionist Tito Puente appears as a caveman.

So let's jump into our review then here for this.

Now, I do know something like Blazing Saddles is one where I know a lot of people don't really enjoy it as much because of how far it goes with some of the comedy there, but I still think that there is warrant and merit into what he's done.

So something else I wanna bring up here.

The Quest for Fire, that film often comes to mind when analyzing these prehistoric depictions, leading many to believe that Brooks was directly parodying that specific drama.

However, historical context reveals a fascinating cinematic coincidence which happens so much.
