Queer Palm

Sean Brun's lovingly satirical slasher film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this past May, where it won the Queer Palm in the Un Certain Regard section, which I was really trying to figure out how to... described to people who aren't familiar with can competition categories, what that actually means.

This one arrives with a lot of hype and buzz, having won the Queer Palm, which is an independently sponsored prize for selected LGBTQIA+ relevant films, at this year's Cannes Film Festival, and while I just couldn't get into I Saw the TV Glow and found it quite meh, that movie has already achieved cult status in the queer community, and I've a feeling this one will follow a similar trajectory.

As a massive fan of '80s slasher movies, I was quite excited for this one, not gonna lie, but alas, it again felt a bit all over the gaff and somewhat lacking in any substance that I could sink my teeth into.

The visuals are great, with some fascinating set piece choices being made, and I'll always have that Counting Crows A Long December montage scene.

But when she visits the original movie star, a now reclusive actress shrouded in mystery, the two women fall into a blood-soaked world of desire, fear, and delirium.

This Camp, with a capital C, psychosexual horror won the Queer Palm at the Cannes Film Festival and had a spate of sold-out sessions at film festivals since, and it's now in limited release around Australia.
