Puppetry

Let's see here, some of the names of the shows.

We've got Light and Shadow, we've got Music as Puppetry, Cellobration, get it? Beyond classical, standing on shoulders.

The one I'm very excited about is the October show, the David Lavoie Quartet.

They're going to spend the afternoon with a collective of some of Calgary's biggest, brightest young jazz musicians presenting standards in music.

The main character could be being animated on 30 different sets at the same time by 30 different animators, but how do you make it feel like it was done by one set of hands? Right.

Puppetry is inherently a deeply technical medium,

but the thing that I love about Leica is that that doesn't get in the way of making sure that the characters are memorable, are emotional, because we've all seen work like that, where you sort of are like, I'm really proud of the precision, but I kind of don't care.

You are going to animate Curtis.

But it is a funny... thing because what you're also talking about is much more than moves but it's the the you know a puppet communicates physically yes and it communicates emotionally physically i mean one thing that i really feel like i i you know i think our ethoses might be similar because Puppetry is inherently a deeply technical medium.

There's no two ways around it.

And what we do have here is our host, Seth, welcoming students to Introduction to Puppetry, where we are going to have puppets.

His is Gooby, and he practices voices with them.

And we're going to have Kenan Thompson, Vanessa Bayer, and Bill Hader, all as students.

Again, great for all ages.

Um, someone once described it, one of their reviews described it as if Hitchcock made puppet theater-

And it is about 400 years of survival through tyranny, through war, uh, of these hand puppet heroes, Kasper and Gretel, which are the traditional hand puppets of Germany.

Mm-hmm.

Um, it's also a, a little bit of a, a lesson in hand puppet theater traditions.
