T

Hey, hey, folks, and welcome to the Daily Ratings podcast.
T
0:17TomHOST
It's a show where each week we're going to be sitting down with Vincent Daly to get his thoughts on the latest movies he's been watching, both older films and new releases.
T
0:26TomHOST
And don't worry, there's no spoilers.
T
0:28TomHOST
Vince will give a brief review of the movie, share some thoughts, and of course, then rate the film.
T
1:04TomHOST
Stay tuned and enjoy the show.
T
1:28TomHOST
Mr. Vincent Daly, how are we doing across the table, sir? Thomas, how's it going? It is going okay with me.
T
1:34TomHOST
How was your week of movies, man? You know, the week here was real interesting.
T

It
Resident Evil (2026)
E

M
8:37MichaelHOST
I watched Pulse from 2001, which is a Kiyoshi Kurosawa movie, which you and I watched Cure.
E
8:49ErikHOST
was pretty good this one was that the one where that guy was like in the wall he was like tucked in is there a part he was like in a little wall compartment i feel like i

27. Shocker (1989)
J
48:08Jim LaczkowskiGUEST
Well, one of my f- all, it was definitely another movie to consider for a future episode too just because, I mean, gosh, I don't know.
J
48:18Jim LaczkowskiGUEST
I, there's something about Pulse.
C
48:20Chloe WarrianHOST
Yeah.
J
48:20Jim LaczkowskiGUEST
Uh, Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Pulse that really unnerves me, and it, it features this, you know, like computer virus that opens a portal to the realm of the dead and just allows vengeful spirits to travel along internet connections in this case, and they can sort of like download this life force from their victims.
J
48:40Jim LaczkowskiGUEST
And I don't know, that, that whole scenario and the tone and the, the feeling of dread when I watch that movie is just unlike anything, uh, I've seen.
J
48:52Jim LaczkowskiGUEST
And I know that like J-horror kind of captures that a lot, but I, there's just something about that version of Pulse where I also think of it as a great portrayal of depression- Because a lot of these people are really disconnected from their emotions and, you know, dehumanized to some degree and dreading just what's gonna happen to them.
J
49:14Jim LaczkowskiGUEST
And, you know, eventually the movie ends.
J
49:17Jim LaczkowskiGUEST
So I won't say because there, I won't, for people who haven't seen it, I won't say how everything plays out, but it just, oof, it really gets to me by the end in a major way.
Onslaught, Fall 2: Deadpoint

It's driving me fucking insane, actually.
B
10:37Brett ArnoldHOST
But Sony Screen Gems and Spyglass are developing a reimagining of the Japanese horror movie Pulse, which, correct me if I'm wrong, was the 2061 a remake or just another movie called Pulse? Pulse.
J
10:49Jesse HassengerHOST
It was a remake, yes.
J
10:51Jesse HassengerHOST
Yeah, I thought it was.
B
11:19Brett ArnoldHOST
Um, but that guy is directing this remake of pulse, which is a script from Luke Petrowski who wrote like the night house.
B
11:27Brett ArnoldHOST
And I believe the hell raiser remake that I didn't like, but, I think that's also the guy who wrote, wasn't it Super Dark Times? Isn't that that person? Yeah, I think so.
B
11:35Brett ArnoldHOST
Anyway, Pulse is the Kiyoshi Kurosawa movie that follows two groups of people who discover evidence that suggests spirits may be trying to invade the human world through the internet.
B
11:43Brett ArnoldHOST
That movie is, to this day, such a reference point.

Episode 191: The Changeling (with Robert Ottone)
R
8:26Robert OttoneGUEST
Like there- I wanted there to be that investigative element to it similar to something like this or similar to something like The Ring or whatever.
R
8:34Robert OttoneGUEST
Um, or, um, Pulse, uh, Kairo, Pulse.
S
8:37Steve GuntliHOST
Oh, yeah.
R
8:38Robert OttoneGUEST

I do consider Pulse, though.
T
3:22Trent GayHOST
We talked about... 100%.
T
3:25Trent GayHOST
Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Pulse.
T
3:26Trent GayHOST
I think that's maybe my favorite of quote unquote J-horror, which to me means ghost story, childhood trauma.
T
3:35Trent GayHOST
These guys were elevated way before The Witch, all right? That era of spooky ghost stories and past trauma and a little bit of folk coming in there that started really popularly with Ringu, the original was 98.
K
4:15Kevin KennieHOST
Do you remember that one? Jennifer Connelly.
K
4:18Kevin KennieHOST
Connelly? Sorry, Connelly.

When you're looking for a horror movie to scare you, what are you looking for?
C
5:09Chelsea RebeccaGUEST
Ooh, to scare me? Honestly, that's why I picked this, because I had never seen it, Pulse.
C
5:17Chelsea RebeccaGUEST
And there's so many traits about it that I gravitate towards when I want something to actually freak me out.
C
5:24Chelsea RebeccaGUEST
There is kind of a found footage element to it.
