So if I say GMH, that's Gary Michael Hall.

So there are resources available, although I think it's fair to say, and I think we can all agree, that there are significant gaps in the resources that are available to people who need legal help.

whether that's because they can't afford to hire an attorney and it's a kind of case where free representation is not available or just because the process is confusing the law is confusing I mean we go to law school for three years for a reason it's not like you don't just pick it up by reading a couple articles on the internet in criminal cases when someone's charged with a misdemeanor or a felony so anybody facing a jail sentence may be eligible for representation by the Allegheny County Public Defender's Office But there are some financial qualification requirements, but they take generally anybody who's eligible.

They make it very easy to apply, although you have to go downtown to apply in person.

It's the easiest and best way.

In a recent court filing opposing prosecutors' motions seeking to protect information related to the use of investigative genetic genealogy in the case, an attorney representing Kohberger said there is no connection between Kohberger and the slain students.

J. Weston Logsdon, an attorney with the Kootenai County Public Defender's Office, wrote that there is no explanation for the total lack of DNA evidence from the victims in Mr. Kohberger's apartment, office, home, or vehicle.

Let's not act like he was arrested the day after.

The guy had, what, six, seven weeks to get rid of evidence, to clean things up? And I think that he had that car ready to go.

Kohberger, 28, was arrested on December 30th on four counts of first-degree murder and burglary.

Prosecutors allege he killed Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin at a shared student house in Moscow, Idaho, during the early hours of November 13th.

On January 1st, Jason LaBar, Kohberger's public defender in Pennsylvania, where he was arrested, said his client is eager to be exonerated of these charges and should be presumed innocent until proven otherwise.

And that was all fine and well before the affidavit, right? Now, obviously, if you're in the court or you're gonna be a juror, you have to be very, very clinical with how you go about things.

After graduating from Michigan undergrad, he took an unconventional and slightly circuitous path to the business world.

He started in D.C. as a criminal investigator in the Public Defender Service before working in the Peace Corps as a roadie for The Who, believe it or not, and then eventually going to NYU Law School.

He worked for the Legal Aid Society for several years before moving over to the business world at Magna Care, a PPO HMO, as their chief operating officer, and later Franklin Credit, a publicly traded mortgage platform.

He then moved over to the investing side with Silver Point, Garrison, and then spent fifteen years at CarVal, where he built and ran what would now be called their ABF business unit.

We're gonna go through some of these post-college years quickly, but it's too fun not to.

Give me the CliffsNotes version of how a criminal investigator, public defender type who worked in the Peace Corps ends up moving into the business world.

What was your first job out of college?

It took me back to my childhood and BB Arkansas when a white man in a pickup truck or pickup trucks armed with rifles would drive by our house yelling ends and racist chance.

So the judge, there is a judge there, and there has been lots of outrage.

When a complaint was made to that body, they did nothing.

Nothing.

When the Public Defender's Office, who was pushing this, saying stop doing this, actually went then to the court's leadership.

Back in 2022, the court did nothing.
