And so, with these two factors combined, reptiles were able to take over the reins, if you will.

As it was then, about 228 million years ago, that we saw the evolution of the, wait for it, the first pterosaurs, a clade of extremely diverse flying reptiles that would one day go on to change the world.

However, they would have to wait a bit, as during the Triassic, they still had a lot of room to grow, but they still did make some considerable advancements, outgrowing any flying animal seen prior to this point.

And of the Triassic, the largest and arguably the deadliest of this lot would have been the Caelesteventis.

And based on the design of this skull, it's also presumed that this pterosaur largely hunted by eyesight using powerful vision to scour the dunes for any signs of movement, while then its wing construction then made it a very agile flyer, being capable of taking advantage of the less dense, warm desert air.

And so, conclusion here is pretty much that this guy was a nightmare concoction for all the small animals that lived within those very ancient dunes.

Okay, so Caelus Deventus is without a doubt a very strong first contender for the pterosaurs.

But let me tell you, this group had very little interest in giving up their newfound crown of the skies, or stopping at 1.5 meters in wingspan.
