get it.

Yeah, this is kind of talking about, again, the big questions around and the issues around medications and how that plays into birth defects and the worry of the concern of that.
Janet VarneyHOST
29:31
And, you know, psychiatric medications for women of any age or stage, but especially in the postpartum period, even more if breastfeeding was continued fairly recently, all these things can cause hormonal shifts.

It's like the Citizen Review Board for Psychotropic Meds at the FDA for the last couple decades because of what happened to her husband.
David WayneGUEST

It was so egregious.
David WayneGUEST

Actually, a lot of the information that we have about how bastardly Pfizer was regarding Zaloft is because of her lawsuit against them.
Josef Witt-DoerringGUEST

Sure.

So starting with the chemical imbalance, it is the most overstated cause of depression and anxiety and so let's just start there because that's what 80% of psychiatric drugs are being prescribed for depression and anxiety and now most people may be a little shocked to hear that genetic factors really don't account for that much depression even though that's what we've been hearing for the last 30 years and the reason you've been hearing that is overstating the role of genetics has been a goal of the pharmaceutical industry.
Josef Witt-DoerringGUEST

Just bear with me now.
Josef Witt-DoerringGUEST

If it sounds like I'm wearing a bit of a tin hat here, the logic is essentially if you are selling drugs that help this condition, it behooves you to sort of present the condition in a very medical way, in a very biological and genetic way, because it positions your cure essentially as the one that's more logical.

Josef Witt-DoerringGUEST
17:19
That's the first step to doing well.
Sasha Altman DeBruleGUEST

I mean, you know, I'm a good person to ask about it just because we started the Icarus Project in 2002 and that just happened to coincide with like, oh my God, the drastic rise in bipolar diagnoses, you know? And for me, I think one of the things that I...
Sasha Altman DeBruleGUEST

I bring to the table you know in these conversations it's just that I spent so many years talking to so many people about their different like people who came to the Icarus project as they were looking for support and it became so clear that my experience with psych drugs that I've talked about to you today is just so different than a lot of other people and that there's like a lot of people that fucking shouldn't be on the drugs that they're on, you know, obviously.
Sasha Altman DeBruleGUEST
50:06
And I don't know, that's like kind of the spirit of the harm reduction guide to coming off of psych drugs.
Sasha Altman DeBruleGUEST
50:11
I mean, I think that there's a lot of people who end up on these drugs and then have a hard time getting off of them, you know? And
Early BrunnerHOST

yeah, I think it's like...
