Psalm 113

I wanna tell you just a little bit brief history of this Psalm, Psalms 118, because I think it will give you more strength and authority as you're praying if you understand the context historically that it was written in.

So Psalms 118 actually wraps up the Egyptian Hallel, which are Psalms 113 through 118.

And these were songs that God's people would sing during important celebrations and feasts as they gathered to worship and thank God for His faithfulness, specifically His faithfulness in providing them victory over their enemies.

And so if you feel like, "Wow, I've been seeing the enemy attack my child," maybe in their mind, maybe it's just with a thought pattern that you're, like, you're seeing your child, you know, ruminate over and over again.

Suicide is something that affects all of us but it's not the end of the story.

But before we delve into that I would like to go and read a verse to you from Psalm 113 or a couple of verses to you from Psalm 113.

Psalm 113 begins with the exhortation to praise the Lord.

Praise the Lord you his servants.

Praise the name of the Lord.

This, by the way, Psalm 118, is the last psalm of what's called the Hallel.

kind of the praise, Psalm 113 to 118.

It's the psalms that are typically used at the Passover.

And even today, Jews will read the psalms and will read this psalm last as they celebrate the Passover, this psalm that speaks about the rejected cornerstone.

From the rising of the sun to its setting, may the name of the Lord be praised.

Psalm 113.

Praise, O servants of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord.

May the name of the Lord be blessed both now and forevermore.

And then if you look at that Sanctus, like especially in Divine Service 3, it's very clear.

look what's happening there so we sing these words holy holy holy and this is the song of heaven and then what do we connect it to hosanna hosanna hosanna and this is the song of earth okay so look what we're doing we just got done saying therefore with angels and archangels all the company of heaven right everyone in heaven we're going to worship you we're going to join earth's worship to heaven's worship so what do we do we take holy holy holy that's the song of heaven and we combine it with hosanna hosanna hosanna that's the song of earth and look what we've done we've put them together in one song and we're saying heaven and earth are connected joined together in the sacrament of the altar so in a very real sense heaven is here god is here this is a marvelous confession so we may not know where the heaven is where psalm 113 says god looks down from but we can know where heaven meets earth and that is in the sacrament of the altar
