Proverbs 22

I'm having a little fun about this, but he was truly brilliant, and not only knew the text, knew the footnoting, knew the textual apparatus, knew arguments for the interpretation at just every place we turned, it seemed.

Well, I was pastoring a church near the seminary at the time, and I was in Proverbs 22, and I was doing something on the family, rearing children.

And I came up with an interpretation that was a little bit of a maverick approach to rearing children.

But I became increasingly more convinced of it.

Sit down.

What's on your mind? I said, well, I'm doing some work in Proverbs 22.

Oh, one of my favorite deeds.

But scripture places something above them all.

It says that a good name, Proverbs 22, verse 1.

Now think about that for a moment.

He didn't say riches first.

This, my friends, is the gospel, and I would encourage you to spend some time remembering that today and worshiping God for that.

Let's look at Proverbs 22 now and just notice a couple key things here that we need to apply and see even in our own culture.

Verse 7 there in Proverbs 22, sometimes there's phrases that you hear.

It's good to remember not only that they're in the Bible, but where they are in the Bible.

Proverbs 22 7 gives us that memorable phrase, the borrower is the slave of the lender.

And there is just an inherent warning there about debt.

And I'm not trying to say all debt is evil or sinful, or if you have a mortgage payment, you're in sin.

That's so beautiful.

Proverbs 22, verse four says this, by humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life.

As we're talking, as we're finishing up the series of the joy to dying to self, are there more things that we could be preaching on it? Yep, there's a lot more.

There's a lot more scriptures.

So for the reading for today, there's also Proverbs 4, uh, Proverbs 15 and 16, Proverbs 22, and you'll get lots of nourishment as you read these.

Again, look for the themes of how are people being invited to fear the Lord, which means to be covenantally relational to him, to be reverentially awe, uh, to him.

People are invited to listen to wise people in their lives, like parents, church leaders, and to symbolically see wisdom as the tree of life, the divine feminine that is like the nourishing mother that will lead us back into God's presence.
