Proverbs 17.
Patrick DaneGUEST
25:45
Proverbs 17, verse 22, very specifically, where a merry heart doeth good like a medicine, but a broken spirit dryeth the bones.
Patrick DaneGUEST
25:53
And you hear that, oh, that's a wonderful saying.
Patrick DaneGUEST
25:55
I commit that to memory.
Patrick DaneGUEST
26:03
Well, there's a seeming conflict here then.
Patrick DaneGUEST
26:05
Because what do you do with those passages of Scripture where the Lord invites us, in fact, even commands us, in 3 Nephi 9 and 10, he does this very deliberately, that that there's no sacrifice that is acceptable but a broken heart and a contrite spirit.
Patrick DaneGUEST
26:19
What does it mean? Is there a difference in Proverbs 17 when he says, a broken spirit dryeth the bones? Is that different than having a broken heart? If there is, in what way? Or are they sister virtues in some way? Is having a broken spirit that dryeth the bones, is that a good thing or is that a bad thing? And that's caused me to really reflect, is there a conflict here between what I'm learning from Proverbs and what I'm learning from the resurrected Lord in the Book of Mormon? Let me give you another one.

Wilson Van HooserHOST
6:07
It's not saying that fathers are never sorrowful over their foolish son, nor is it saying that mothers are never glad because of a wise son.
Wilson Van HooserHOST
6:18
No, it says in Proverbs 17, verse 25, And so, We can see elsewhere, of course, a wise son will make both parents glad, and a foolish son will make both parents sorrowful.
Wilson Van HooserHOST
6:39
But there is something peculiar to the father that makes him glad to see his son wise.
Wilson Van HooserHOST
6:47
And there is a unique pain that mothers feel when their son is living in foolishness.
