#554 Sustainability & the Digital Product Passport: Turning Compliance Into a Competitive Edge
A
1:12Andy PolkHOST
What's unique about her is she has a rare background where she's actually been in fashion design, product development.
A
1:19Andy PolkHOST
And she has a lot of expertise on the technology side of all that with PLM, AI.
A
1:26Andy PolkHOST
And she specializes in helping kind of brands modernize their processes and their products.
A
1:32Andy PolkHOST
So Haley, welcome to the Shoe and Share.
H
2:05Hayley BlatteGUEST
And so when I started my career, I had a fine art background and I was really interested in becoming a fashion designer.
H
2:14Hayley BlatteGUEST
Quickly, I learned that most of the day to day is a lot of admin work.
H
2:19Hayley BlatteGUEST
And so how I got involved in tech and PLM specifically was just trying to find a solution for creatives and innovators to just be exactly that.
H
2:32Hayley BlatteGUEST
And so we're at such an exciting time.
Why the Automotive Industry Loves Intelligent Part Numbers — And Why They Can Become a Trap
A
0:34Artificial IntelligenceNARRATOR
Is that fascia color neutral 0000 or is it the painted variant AA01? A modern car packs more than 30,000 parts, from stamped steel body panels and seats down to battery cells and radar brackets.
A
0:47Artificial IntelligenceNARRATOR
Keeping track of all of them from early CAD work to final assembly is one of the toughest jobs in Product Lifecycle Management, PLM, and Enterprise Resource Planning, ERP, 1.
A
0:58Artificial IntelligenceNARRATOR
For decades, carmakers have leaned on intelligent part numbers, often called smart or significant part numbers, to keep that complexity straight.
A
1:07Artificial IntelligenceNARRATOR
One look at a label tells a veteran engineer what the part is, where it bolts onto the car, whether it's prototype or production hardware, and what color it comes in.
A
1:16Artificial IntelligenceNARRATOR
No screen required, but behind that convenience on the plant floor sits a debate I've seen play out in almost every PLM transformation.
A
1:24Artificial IntelligenceNARRATOR
When does a smart number stop being a helpful shortcut and turn into a database trap? Here is how automotive part numbers actually work, why engineers defend them so fiercely, where they break down in modern PLM tools, and what works better.
A
1:38Artificial IntelligenceNARRATOR
What makes a part number intelligent? At its core, a part number does one job.
A
1:43Artificial IntelligenceNARRATOR
It makes sure engineering, purchasing, manufacturing, and service are all talking about the exact same piece of hardware.
Will PTC Do to Schneider What Ansys Did to Synopsys?
K
2:25KaseyHOST
Yeah, back in 2018.
N
2:27NickHOST
That one provides design, build, monitoring of heavy industrial operations versus the PTC, which is more product design and PLM.
K
2:38KaseyHOST
Project Lifecycle Management.
K
2:40KaseyHOST
And related ALM, Application Lifecycle Management and SLM, Service Lifecycle Management for manufacturing products.
N
2:50NickHOST
And it all fits under that PLM or Project Lifecycle Management software.
N
2:54NickHOST
Mm-hmm.
K
2:55KaseyHOST
That's to the purpose of Cognite and PTC is going to get added into this existing Aviva business that Schneider Electric owns.
K
4:12KaseyHOST
not really vertical integration but just kind of widening its capabilities in its little segment so that's the purpose here with schneider electric making this move is trying to build out more of a vertically integrated industrial company and here's what they get for 23 24 billion dollars in cash
13. AI Won't Fix Your Quality System… and Your Prints Don't Belong in the Cloud
E
25:47Ephy TorenbergGUEST
And we realized as our product became more mature, we started going upstream in tiers, from tier three to tier two.
E
25:55Ephy TorenbergGUEST
And then obviously we need to connect with, you know, team center, windshield, PLM software.
E
26:01Ephy TorenbergGUEST
We need to connect with ERP, MES.
J
26:03Jamie MarzilliHOST
I want to take a quick second.
Walmart’s AI Training Payoff, Kroger Bets on RFID & Urban Outfitters Brings AI to Design
C
3:22Chris WaltonHOST
It's high turn, it has a short shelf life, and it has historically been counted by hand.
C
3:27Chris WaltonHOST
And finally, we close today with Urban Outfitters, which is expanding its use of Bamboo Rose's AI-powered product lifecycle management software.
C
3:33Chris WaltonHOST
Urban already runs Bamboo Rose's total PLM platform for product development, sourcing, purchase orders, and global trade.
C
3:40Chris WaltonHOST
Now it's adding the Bamboo Rose Create tool built on Vibe IQ technology, along with Bamboo Rose's decision intelligence layer.
C
3:47Chris WaltonHOST
The result is that design and merchandising teams across urban outfitters, anthropology, free people, FP movement, terrain, and newly can see estimated product costs at the concept stage before samples are made or suppliers are engaged.
Flat Earth: Are Engineering Tools About to Disappear?
P
27:51Peter SeebergHOST
I'm going to just quickly bring one more, and then I'm going to be very positive again.
P
27:58Peter SeebergHOST
Anup Karuman, she says, PLM is more than managing CAD files.
P
28:04Peter SeebergHOST
It's how everything connects together.
P
28:05Peter SeebergHOST
Modern product lifecycle management brings engineering, manufacture.
Rob Ferrone – From a 300-Person Consultancy to Starting Again
R
5:01Rob FerroneGUEST
And they brought the, they improved the situation either by being there or by making permanent changes to the way that processes the systems and tools that were being used.
J
5:11John HowardHOST
And just because I think it might have a bearing on what we're going to talk about later about where your focus is now, kind of the, my understanding is there's a good bit of kind of PLM, product lifecycle management system implementation that you worked alongside.
J
5:23John HowardHOST
Is that correct?
R
5:24Rob FerroneGUEST
Yeah, so exactly.
15 MINS LATER
R
20:29Rob FerroneGUEST
And anyway, it made me think about what I was doing, because I...
R
20:34Rob FerroneGUEST
I was connecting with people.
R
20:35Rob FerroneGUEST
I still kept active in my, my PLM network.
R
20:39Rob FerroneGUEST
And, but I was also then exposing myself to new, new things, new people.
Why Burning Man Matters to Entrepreneurs More Than You Think | Brian Sohmers1
B
13:23Brian SohmersGUEST
Instead of doing huge pivots, you're doing little incremental changes to your product that lead to commercial success.
B
13:33Brian SohmersGUEST
So at Propel, the example I would give is... you know, product lifecycle management was our core, but quality management systems, QMS systems are like, we thought it was hands gentle to PLM.
B
13:46Brian SohmersGUEST
And we learned pretty early on that like QMS was as big, if not bigger business for us than the PLM side.
B
13:54Brian SohmersGUEST
But they go hand in hand, like the QMS wouldn't have been unlocked.
B
13:58Brian SohmersGUEST
We wouldn't have been unlocked that business because it's like a lot of competition in that marketplace without the competitive advantage of having a really good PLM product lifecycle management solution so so you have to understand those like enterprise software anyways those unlocks you know might even though PLM might have you know might not have been as big as we thought it was compared to the QMS it was like obviously necessary they worked hand in hand together to build a bigger commercial solution So, so yeah, those, you know, again, I think it's all about your product process to identify opportunities and continuously innovate and adjust if necessary as you navigate the, and you're never done.
B
14:44Brian SohmersGUEST
So obviously at the beginning, you don't have any metrics to go by.
B
14:48Brian SohmersGUEST
So you're just, you're essentially just evaluating based on do they have, do they understand the problem? Do they have a hypothesis? And do they have a plan that I think will allow them to reasonably get there? Once they have commercial success, then you can start, the metrics tell the story.
AI in CPQ: Configure One's AI Model Builder & AI Seller | Kiana Mostajabian
F
22:03Frank SohnHOST
Great.
F
22:03Frank SohnHOST
And looking further out, you've mentioned the headless CPQ engine for API-driven configuration and the PLM integration accelerator.
F
22:11Frank SohnHOST
What use cases are those aimed for?
K
22:15Kiana MostajabianGUEST
Yeah, so I think both really come from the same idea.
K
22:58Kiana MostajabianGUEST
They want to be able to call Configure One as a service and get back a valid priced configuration on the same rules that their sales team uses.
K
23:10Kiana MostajabianGUEST
Whether the quote comes from a rep, a dealer, or an AI agent, it's built on the same deterministic engine that they know and trust.
K
23:18Kiana MostajabianGUEST
Same idea from a PLM perspective.
K
23:20Kiana MostajabianGUEST
It's all about keeping the model true.
