But a lot of patients will come to me with the question of lidocaine allergy, or they'll say Novocaine, just like yesterday, and I say they don't use Novocaine anymore.

And most of the time, some of these reactions that patients have, it's vasovagal or it's a side effect of the medicine.

Well, I mean, it's only natural, you know, if I go to the dentist and they give me, you know, Novocaine, they give me, you know, they give me anesthetic and, you know, they give me anesthetic and I, you know, and then of course, you know, they drill, they do a filling, whatever they're going to do.

And then the anesthetic starts to wear off.

I'm going to, it's going to hurt, you know, it's going to hurt for a few days because the anesthetic wore off, you know? So definitely in the case of someone who has gone through in their lives a tremendous amount of pain, and of course we've all gone through pain in our lives, I don't think there's a human alive today who can say, oh, you know, my life has just been 100% picture perfect.

So to do that, I use a long-acting numbing medication intraoperatively called Expiril.

So I inject it just like you'd get Novocaine at the dentist, except Because they're asleep and because I'm in there, I can see targeted areas where it will most effectively target the exact nerves that cause pain after surgery.

So that really blunts the initial postoperative pain that people have, and that medication lasts for three or four days.

So once they get over that hump, they've at that point gotten past a lot of the initial pain that would prompt them to take a narcotic.

And then the dentist, he is so awesome.

I mean, I made the mistake once of looking at that contraption that they put the Novocaine in with, and I will never do that again.

So, close my eyes.

He puts the topical numbing medication on first, and so by the time that he puts you with the injection, you don't feel it.

It was ironic because the day that I went in and had this done, I had actually canceled my deep cleaning appointment because I have so much going on and I thought I'm going to put that off.

And I ended up there anyway.

So I have to still get my deep cleanings done, which joyful, which is more Novocaine, which I'm thrilled to pieces about, let me tell you.

But when people say, take care of yourself, well, I did take care of myself.

Leonid had his head propped up with pillows, and his knees were turned to the left, so he was twisted into a position where the lower right side of his abdomen was facing up towards the ceiling.

The doctor had already cut a hole in his hospital gown, so Leonid's swollen stomach was visible, and now through that hole, the doctor injected Novocaine, which is a type of local anesthetic, right into Leonid's abdomen.

In addition to being a meteorologist and a driver of that special vehicle, Leonid was also a recent medical school graduate, and he was the one doctor at this research station.

So Leonid was performing surgery on himself.

He had given himself that Novocaine shot and then forced himself to stay still as he carved a four-inch-long incision into his own abdomen, accidentally slicing into his intestines that he had the wherewithal to then stitch up as he's bleeding to death.

So the race was on to find a non-addictive synthetic version.

And I know patients sit in the dental chair every single day and ask for Novocaine, but that's an incredibly old drug, right? Like, we don't use that anymore.

Right.

Procaine, which was branded as Novocaine, was created in Germany in 1905.

And it was a massive leap forward because it wasn't addictive like cocaine.

But procaine is an ester-based local anesthetic.

In that year came the discovery that established a permanent and valid basis for all forms of local anesthesia.

This was the discovery by the German chemist Einhorn of a relatively safe derivative of the drug, which was called Novocaine.

One of the first surgeons to try the new drug was August Bier, who for years had been experimenting with cocaine as a spinal anesthetic.

Now using Novocaine, he found that it worked like magic.

So the rinse will have a, you know, antimicrobial agent so that the infection risk goes down.

But it also has, lidocaine is the thing that we numb you with, right? Novocaine that a dentist says really is lidocaine or septocaine.

So it has some lidocaine so that when you rinse with it, 30 seconds, perhaps longer, now for the next 10 minutes, you can eat with a bit of a numb tongue and a numb mouth, but at least it won't hurt.

And so you can enjoy the next meal with a little less, you know, pain.
