Seeing that the whole world coming together gives me hope in humanity.

While in Nepal, the death toll continues to rise, in the Dallas area, several organizations, including various religious faiths, are organizing vigils, memorials, and fundraisers to help their motherland.

And as of tomorrow, code enforcement in Garland is transitioning from a criminal to a civil model.

KERA's Priscilla Rice reports on how volunteers are helping residents avoid code violations.

Advocates say under the new civil model, residents will have an opportunity to take care of their citations faster, as well as qualify for assistance through the Garland Cares Compliance Assistance Program.

Glenna Sahidia is a volunteer with the city's Garland Cares program.

Under Garland's previous code enforcement model, an unpaid citation could result in going to criminal court.

The civil model goes into effect September 1st.

Priscilla Rice from member station KERA reports members of a Nepalese community in North Texas are waiting for word from friends and relatives.

The uncertainty of the condition of missing loved ones has impacted the Nepalese community in North Texas, home to over twenty thousand nationals.

The Nepalese American Chamber of Commerce in Dallas has been overwhelmed with calls of concern or from those wanting to help.

The anxiousness, the waiting period has been tough for all the people who are far away from home, and especially for people who have lost their loved ones.

Shrestha says she is planning a vigil in the upcoming days.
