Princes Highway

A person has sadly died and another airlifted to Melbourne with serious injuries after a two-car accident at Heathmere this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the Princes Highway between Surrey River-Gore Road and Finks Road just before two-thirty.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are continuing through the Major Collision Investigation Unit.

Warrnambool City Council has stated the bridge will be closed permanently in 2029.

Council has also tabled a proposal that would have a roundabout installed at the intersection of Garibaldi Lane and the Princes Highway.

Organiser of Tuesday's community rally, Tim McLeod, says access and safety were key concerns.

The bridge to the Allensford community is really important for a whole lot of reasons.

But the biggest concerns around community safety and access to the Princes Highway, not just for the residents leaving town going to Warrnambool, but there's also residents that live on the Warrnambool side of the bridge, between the bridge and the speedway, And the recent proposal by the council to put forward a roundabout and other options for the highway doesn't, or at this stage does not address those residents accessing and egressing their properties.

So the big concern is around safety and accessing and egressing Allensford to Warrnambool.
