Pressure support ventilation

Today we're gonna talk about ventilator modes, including volume control, pressure control, assist control, SIMV, and pressure support.

By the end of this video, you'll be able to look at a ventilator mode and answer three questions.

What are we controlling? Who starts the breath? And how much work is the patient doing? Then we'll use peak pressure, plateau pressure, and the patient's blood pressure to work through what may have changed when a patient stops tolerating the vent.

That means a patient can trigger a mandatory breath.

A spontaneous breath is different.

The patient controls the timing of the breath and when inspiration ends, although the ventilator may still add pressure support.

Let's start with continuous mandatory ventilation or CMV.

In CMV, every breath is mandatory.
