So we started working years ago with the cardiologists when we recognized that certain pregnancy complications were associated with higher risk.

Preeclampsia, for instance, obesity, diabetes, are all associated with higher risk for adult cardiovascular disease.

And so the postpartum period was about trying to focus on achieving a healthier weight versus between pregnancies.

But the whole objective behind extending Medicaid to one year postpartum was so that you could follow up on the hypertension and the diabetes and the obesity, allow people to have a better health signal.

There have been a lot of women whose deaths have been linked to abortion bans, but we haven't seen a case quite like this, a case that is suing people like Attorney General Ken Paxton, a case filed because of someone's death, and a case that is arguing that Texas's abortion ban is unconstitutional because the lawyers say it violates the right to life that is guaranteed by the federal constitution and by Texas's constitution.

Preeclampsia is a high risk blood condition.

It is quite dangerous and it can be treated, but ultimately at a certain point when your blood pressure is as high as hers was and is not responsive to treatment from medication, The only treatment for it can ultimately be ending the pregnancy, delivering before the pregnancy is viable and functionally in abortion.

And in her medical records, in fact, a doctor caring for Tiara Walker wrote that delivering the baby could be the best treatment for her preeclampsia, but this was never an option made available to her.

This was a wanted pregnancy, but Walker already had several serious health problems, including high blood pressure and diabetes.

She had also experienced preeclampsia during an earlier pregnancy.

Preeclampsia is dangerously high blood pressure during pregnancy, and in several cases, it can kill the mother.

According to her family's lawsuit, Walker's health became worse during her pregnancy.

Her family says she repeatedly told her doctor she was afraid of continuing the pregnancy and that it could kill her and ask for an abortion.

And then another common complication in people with diabetes is developing high blood pressure or a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy.

Preeclampsia is probably the most well known of those.

So those are some of the more common complications that I see in my patients in my practice.

Of course, there are rare complications, like stillbirth, that everybody fears.
