Pothos

[upbeat music] Most of you will be very familiar with the indoor plants that Kira is talking about here, and if not, this is an excellent place for a real beginner's beginner to start.

Pothos is a vining plant that is very difficult to kill.

It comes in several different varieties.

Some are solidly green, but many are variegated or kind of striped with white or light green stripes.

It also is a model organism for understanding chloroplast development because there are so many variegated varieties, and it's so quick to turn those green genes off and on, so scientists wanna study what makes plants green and not green.

There's also a ton of work looking into the potential role of plants for indoor air quality remediation.

So Pothos became a standard test species for NASA, who have been studying sustainable ways to cycle air in sealed chambers.

They quickly pivoted to active botanical biofiltration, so they're forcing air through root zone substrates rather than passive leaf uptake on living plants.

I've I've seen on social media the the people who have like a few Pothos baskets on their ceiling and then they they run them across the the ceiling.

So they're finding like a new grid pattern.

And eventually, you know, you'll have that canopy look.

I want to tell Ken, Ken, there are way worse things you can be addicted to than Pothos.

He didn't struggle with the Pothos, but he struggled with a few of his other plants, but he doesn't give up.

This man has packed his patience, and this particular cart on the deck with the Pothos baskets in it is just really pretty.

And, Ken, there's hope for you because you did admit you have an addiction.

English ivy is a trailing plant, right? So if you want something similar to that, the first thing that jumps out in my mind, and probably for a lot of you guys too, is pothos.

Pothos is such a hardy, classic, trailing plant for the inside of our homes.

It also, sidebar, works really well outside in a shaded container garden.

I work with pothos all the time inside restaurants, hotels, offices, and while each space is a little bit different, sort of like its own microclimate, and there isn't a plant that's literally going to do well in every single environment, I would say the Pothos is pretty dang reliable.

Now there are situations where it's not a good fit.

I have some offices that have no windows and it's very, very cold and dry and even Pothos won't survive in that type of situation.

But for your average home and the temperatures that you're keeping it in, you're going to be fine.

Then I started looking at, why aren't more people putting Monstera in their reef tanks? I mean, not in their reef tanks, in their freshwater tanks.

Because people say Pathos is supposed to be great.

People say Hyacinth is supposed to be great.

But people who do testing on that find out that they're not so great.

And again, aquatic biologists and chemists, I apologize.

But so when you do like planted, submerged, proper planted underwater plants, like some of them need carbon dioxide fused in the water.

But that's what I've always heard about terrestrial things like Pothos.

And like what you're doing is they're not they're taking atmospheric carbon dioxide and And still doing their thing, sucking up nitrates and phosphates out of the water without that carbon dioxide being a limited factor.

I have a Raven as well.

Cause it's easy as a very, I say beginner friendly plant because honestly, like a Pothos, you can almost neglect it.

It almost wants to neglect and it will do perfectly fine.

It's very easy to maintain.
