Potential enlargement of the European Union

So what exactly does an associate member mean for Canada? How will it extend its relationship with the EU? And what's the impact on other countries going through the long process of becoming EU members? Well, joining me to discuss this is Tinatine Akvlediani.

She's head of EU enlargement at the Centre for European Policy Studies.

So the EU accession can have a lot of complications.

Why is this the case? Because every decision on the enlargement is taken by unanimity and EU member states are not always on the same page when it comes to the progress on the EU enlargement.

So this is a very burdensome process.
