Postpartum thyroiditis

after you have a baby, your thyroid, it can get thrown off.

There's something called postpartum thyroiditis.

Itis is inflamed.

So postpartum, this is occurring in the postpartum period, thyroiditis, inflamed thyroid, okay? To make it simple.

up so please hopefully you guys can't hear it too too loudly um and if you can i apologize i'm not gonna re-record this this is the time i got we're gonna go with it okay all right back to what i was talking about so postpartum thyroiditis five to ten percent of women in the united states that's what it's going to affect and it can be pretty sneaky because it often goes in two phases So first, it can go too fast.

That's usually about one to four months after birth.

Right.

And this biphasic pattern, a period of rapid hyperfunctioning followed by a crash into sluggishness, is a classic hallmark of postpartum thyroiditis.

Can you explain the mechanism there?

Sure.

And a physical examination, which arguably should have been done much earlier, finally revealed a small, painless goiter, an enlarged thyroid gland in her neck.

Right.

So the true diagnosis was postpartum thyroiditis, severely exacerbated by iatrogenic lithium administration.

The treatment plan was immediately overhauled.
