How to get the new school year off to a good start: Points of View
O
16:18Ollie BaylissPANELIST
I've never seen it in person, but know exactly why you're there.
O
16:22Ollie BaylissPANELIST
If you're a PGCE that's unsalaried, that's supernumerary, or that's getting a bursary, your first couple weeks, you're not pushed into in front of a class that is not what you're there to do you're there to begin slowly observing teachers in the first three weeks you shouldn't be teaching a class at all like maybe a maybe a starter the whole point of you being in there is to watch the teaching like you're not watching knowledge anymore if you've just come from university and done your degree you're watching how how a teacher teaches and then using that knowledge to then try and teach a class so my my biggest advice if you're a pgc or an ect know exactly what your role is but pgc supernumerary you shouldn't be teaching the first couple weeks you have really minimal hours um all that till christmas you shouldn't really be getting those you're not even meant to be getting a full full timetable until the last couple of weeks if you can before that that's amazing but don't feel pressurized to do that remember If you're a history teacher like me who trained to be a history teacher, you were not getting paid.
O
17:26Ollie BaylissPANELIST
So do not take on those additional responsibilities if you don't have to.
O
17:31Ollie BaylissPANELIST
Make sure you just try your best and learn from those teachers because that year is so good in watching different styles of teaching and watching different ideas and then for you to try and replicate them and have a go at them in the classroom um if you're an ect make sure you look at your hours make sure you know what what the amount of hours you should have what that induction should look like because different providers do different uh forms of induction um and read into it don't like don't not be make the mistake where You've got a full timetable that's more hours than you should do.

and some sort of an act and some sort of a you know giving people an impression or a view of you that might not be completely who you are i mean my first two years in my first school i had a terrible so when i finished my pgce i did a supply contract for six weeks at the end of my pgca okay because it was pay a paid opportunity yeah it was in the school that I did my second placement in, which was a really, really tough school.
T
42:25Tom RogersHOST
I remember students in that six weeks standing up in the class telling me to F off and just things that I was like, I really, this is terrible.
T
42:35Tom RogersHOST
And I was trying to be what I knew I should be at the end of that PGCE, but they knew I was the supply teacher and it was July.
